A few days ago I attached the external drive to the front USB on the WD TV and made these setting changes:
Setup > System > Media Library > Off
Setup > System > Get Content Info > Manual Only
Setup > Network Settings > Network Share Management > Windows Share Server > Off
Setup > Network Settings > Network Share Management > Enable Access to Linux Share Servers > Off
There was no improvement in my ability to play videos.
Next, I reattached the external drive to the PC and rebooted the WD TV (unplugged power cord and waited 5 minutes) after encountering a video file that would not play: this did not improve anything either.
In terms of supported video formats, I did a lot of research before buying the WD TV. It was supposed to be one of the most compatible units on the market. As far as I know all of my videos are compatible with the supported formats:
Dear me. You have asked for help but you are not listening. Forget media libraries and what the WD is capable of. We know that it should play your files. Its the way you are playing them.
If you could just do what is asked then we may be able to move forward. It should not take you long to connect your drive directly to the WD player and test out the playing as I suggested. This is part of a troubleshooting test.
Joey, this is by far the best and most interesting part of this thread. Kudos to you!
I tried to “steal it” from the page, but I forgot how to save these animated gifs so they stay animated. Any suggestions. before I bash my head trying to figure it out?
It’s an animated GIF so every tool that read this properly (like Irfanview) will show the animation. When you embed it into your page it depends on the browser how often/when the animation is shown.
Shouldn’t be too dificult Mike. I am using Chrome on WIndows. I just right clicked on it and hit “save image as”. By default it will save it as a gif. Once saved to your drive, if you double click on it whatever app you have associated with GIF will open it and will hopefully show you the animation. I have GIF associated with Chrome, so opening it I get Joey’s GIF in motion. Hence, I know that I have saved the animated version (and not a single frame version) and can then embed it into a post at some point down the road.
+1 Joey, great GIF and as they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”
I attached the external drive to the front USB of the WD TV, and followed RichUK’s directions, but there was no improvement in playing videos at the folder or file level.
With mention being made of DVDs, I then went into Setup-Video Settings-DVD menu, and turned this option Off. I am happy to report that this took care of everything! All video files play beautifully, in all formats. When I reattached the external drive to the PC, leaving DVD Menu off, everything still worked perfectly.
I can’t explain why, but this trial and error worked. Thanks for your suggestions, graphics, and patience.
Happy Holidays everyone and have a healthy, technical issue free 2014!
home movie tape is copied from Sony camcorder to Sony DVD burner
the finalized DVD is copied to a folder on the external hard drive via Roxio Creator 11-Video Copy and Convert
Roxio also provides the option to convert the folder contents to other formats if desired
Not having the DVD Menu options available while viewing through WD TV is a minor inconvenience, but it would be nice to be able to have some basic functions (forward, reverse, jump next to next chapter) available. If I select these options on the remote, the video starts playing over from the beginning.
Maybe the problems you have are caused by how you (or your programs) are doing this. Not saying I have the answer, but I have made some laserdisc transfers to a DVD using my DVD Recorder. Here is one example of a DVD disc I made and converted to an ISO file for use on the WDTV, and then I later took the ISO file and converted it into an mp4 file for use on the iPad. In both cases, the video is fine and plays correctly.
In the case of the ISO file, the menu is intact, even though there is only one chapter on the DVD, and I have to use the DVD menu to play that chapter on the WDTV. In the case of the mp4 file from the ISO file, there is no menu – Handbrake just looked for the largest file and made the mp4 from it, so when it plays on the iPad, the video just starts to play with no menu.
