website aims to make things easy but dumbs things down so much the product becomes unusable for users with even a basic understanding of networked drives.
have lost files just because I could not access anymore. Was able to rescue some via a terminal session. After that the drive went to slow blinking again and could only get it back using a 60 second reset.
I will never buy any Western Digital product ever again due to this experience.
Yet with all the flaws, personal cloud users kept on buying the My Cloud Home (MCH) and competitors kept on copying the design, with Synology copying most of the features of the MCH in their 2024 BeeStation personal cloud storage. And after all the copying, the BeeStation is still lacking some important features of the MCH such as DLNA and collaborative folder sharing.
People buy the MCH because it is cheap and easy and good enough for most users and not because it is feature rich or very durable.
Some owners were still able to buy the MCH in 2024 for ~$100 refurbished with a two year warranty for the MCH 4TB. The 4 TB cloud storage pays for itself in a year or two.

No thanks. Why would I buy a used 4TB MCH when I could buy a refurbished from WD Ebay store with a 2 year All State warranty for $99 free shipping when it is on sale?
If you got more than 2 years of use out of a MCH and didn’t pay too much for it, considered yourself lucky and move on. A two year subscription of 4 terabytes cloud storage would have cost much more than $100.
