I wouldn’t go replacing any chips at this stage. I would first obtain WD’s OK to open your enclosure (so that you don’t void your warranty). Then I would detach the HDD from your USB-SATA bridge board and power up the board on its own. If the board now consistently detects as an Initio Default Controller, then this will help us understand how the bridge responds to a faulty HDD.
Same issue. drive shows up in device manager but NOT in explorer, so cannot get to drive. Tried on 2 win7 machines anbd 1 xp computer. Used the WD diagnoitic and the drives passes. No idea what to do next.
So how many issues are there now?? in this little thread alone… 3.
Is it thus a general WD problem? I mean, the harddisks are no cheap things… We have all paid something for them…
I hope I manage to get through to the support team very soon. I fear the worst for WD otherwise…

Does the drive show up in Disk Management? If so, then it’s most likely suffered file system corruption. If you’re looking to recover the data (which you should need to do if you have it backed up), then you will need to get data recovery software that restores file systems. Whatever data is corrupted won’t be recoverable though.
Otherwise, if you do have your data backed up, then you can just reformat the drive. Make sure to always safely remove any external disks, especially after copying data to them. This will prevent most data corruption.
I am having the same issue . Googled a lot and spent lot of time on this issue . I have used this disk only couple of times since when I bought it . Last time I used it was 1 month back and it was working just fine .
Help is appreciated from WD team
Did you find any solution ? I have my laptop to get serviced on tommorrow so need to take backup today and I have my important data in this disk . Its realy frustrating . I read in this thred that I need to take backup of this disk . I bought Mybook to take back of the data on my laptop. What is the use if I have to back up Mybook itself?
Check Disk Management to see if the drive shows up there. If it does, then you may have corrupted the file system. There is software out there that might restore the file system.
About the My Book as your backup, you would think that having a backup would be enough. When I back up my data, I’ve learned to put it in three locations rather than just two. For plain documents, I also use DVD’s to still back up. That way I don’t have to worry about mechanical failure. Data management will soon become the bane of our existence.
At all times you should have 2 copies of anything important. If you are working on hardware that is holding one of those copies, then you need what would seem to be a 3rd copy.
…as the copy you’re working on is no longer “safe”, it is being exposed to the possibility of “user error”. This applies to any manufacturer of any hard disk or other storage device.
