Sorry guys, but WD is giving to the world a show of incompetency!
It’s unbelievable that you’re still insisting that this version is OK and maintaining it in your website to download! And, to complete the shame, the support is blaming users and M$'s .NET.
Let’s understand the scenario: everybody has prior versions working perfectly, but when update it the problems starts (SmartWare disappears for most users or crash when installs). Nobody think that is strange being an OS related problem, since it was working before the update??
I’m having SmartWare uninstalled by the update in 4 computers. Two with W7, one with Vista and other with XP. Not a single successful update. This is inadmissible!
Lame answer from WD technical support. Blame it on the NET 3.5 is an easy way to avoid responsibility and your own incompetency!
How long do you going to keep the problematic version to download?
also think it’s a bad joke on their part not put a new version to restore the previous version now if had not bought the disc and there is no penalty complaints book
Today I tried to install the update on my notebook at work, with Vista Enterprise Business English and it misteriously installed.
In my desktop at home I was not able to install it, running Vista Home Premium.
Putting the Windows edition aside, my suspects are now pointing to the language. It seems the WD installer does not work in a OS with language different from English. Analyzing people who are posting to this topic, I can see some French, other Brazilians (like me), so I think it is very likely to be the OS language.
If this is the case than its a screaming example of incompetent coders. They need to rise wages for coders within WD so they can attract competent people who wont do basic mistakes.
My Windows is Hungarian (W7 Ultimate x86) and I even had problems installing the old WD "Smart"Ware because of the different language. They gave us an update then, so there would be very unprofessional to commit that mistake with the languages again.
But! I also tried to update to 1.3.0.16 at work where English Windows is used (XP Pro SP3 x86), no progress has been made - all WD related software disappears during the update process.
I have the same problem. WD SmartWare1.1.1.6 on Windows Vista home Premium SP2 spanish was very slowly, consuming to many ressources. While updating to 1.3.0.16 version, the previous folder and the program disappears.
In fact, the update will auto uninstall itself if the version of .Net is not 3.5 even if you have the 4.0. Well done, dev guys …
So, you have to set the xml file to 4.0 to let the install runs. BUT, once the install try to start the WD service, one of them fails because of security token not set and whatever you do, the service won’t start. So, when you cancel the try, all is uninstalled.
In fact, the application was not tested, just put on market like others ; to users to do the beta tests.
So, just wait that good dev just do there job before you crash your OS.
I do have the same problem and reported the update issue to WD already +/- 3 weeks ago.
My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit). I sent several emails to Gerben V of WD (in the Netherlands??) on the subject and he mailed me that my problem was handed over to WD’s second-line support on May 27th. Since that date and after a few emails to him for an update, no reply at all.
It seems to be that they don’t care what customers are facing and, from a customer support point of view, not replying to emails of customers is absolutely unacceptable.
Same problem here… when I’ve installed the firmware update and smartware update ver 1.3.0.16, the SmartWare launch icon is gone after restart. Only WDDM status icon left.
A Windows install new software window pops up but doesn’t find any drivers if you try to use it. I installed Microsoft .NET 4 before updating, but no difference.
I launched SmartWare from the virtual CD drive but the version of course goes back to the Stone Age…
I’m running a Danish-language Win XP. Please WD… read this forum…
same problem here… Win XP SP 3 GERMAN. After updating (and reboot PC) there is no smartware on the PC. No folder in the program folder and no task on taskmanager.
WD come on - it`s unbelievable that you release this broken update for Windows with international language.
