Very new to the MacBook Pro and External hard drive thing

I just purchased the 1 TB G-Drive mobile USB-C and I am needing information on exactly how this works:
-how to store documents directly to the drive
-how this will work with the Microsoft package
-any known issues that may occur with the drive

any help or a source I can read up will be greatly appreciated
