Thanks and no worries. I was able to measure the size without breaking open the wrap around the battery (didn’t get the depth but that should be okay).
The upgrade went well, I only needed to flash the firmware once. The drive originally reported it was only 256GB but a “System and Disk” "factory restore fixed that and it now reports the correct volume of 4TB. I also managed to find another Wireless Pro that was relatively inexpensive so now I have a backup for parts or the option to make another My Passport Wireless SSD!
YES! That is perfect. Believe me, I’m happy it worked In a sense, you’ve paved the way for others, when they see your success.
And in addition you’re now a proud Red owner
The BMS should be approx. 1mm in depth, probably better, if you can cut/print out 2mm, though, for the cables to be soldered and such. Knowing the battery pack comes from WD, it’ll probably fall, sooner, or later
So I was testing the drive today by backing up SD cards. After a few cards (~300GB) the drive shut down because it was over safe temperatures. I let it cool down for 30 minutes and when I tried to turn it on again it wouldn’t boot, all the LEDs started flashing indicating there was a file system error. I tried plugging in the drive and it wouldn’t mount. I put the SSD on another SATA board and it mounts. I tried to flash the firmware again and that doesn’t work. I put the original HDD back into the board and that also mounts when plugged in and boots normally when it’s not plugged in. I tried both boards I have and the same thing happens… Going to return this drive. I’m just not sure if I should order a new one and try again…
Mhm, that is curious indeed. If you order another drive, let me know, how it goes. I mainly use mine as a mobile Plex server and, of course, storage of media files and hadn’t had any problems.
I ain’t sure, if that’s really important. I can’t seem to recall the details of me going through the procedure but in the end you can reset and even reformat the drive, once the firmware’s on.
I confirm successful upgrade of WD My Passport Wireless Pro to WD My Passport Wireless SSD by replacing the original 1 TB HDD by a 4 TB SSD WD Red SA500 WDS400T2R0A-68CKB0:
The drive can be inserted out of the box without prior initialization. Firmware installation followed by Restore Factory Default Settings | System and Disk will automatically prepare the following drive layout:
I hope this will help enthusiasts to make the most use of WD My Passport Wireless Pro/SSD.
