Preface: Long time WD user here (and I was for several years a large supplier to WD Malaysia, Peter Ng will probably remember me). This is the first time I’ve had a problem with a WD drive of any kind, and I’ve had (and still have) more than a dozen.
So… I have a 1Tb External drive, it’s old enough that it still uses the ‘standard’ mini-USB connector, so I have no concerns about keeping the drive once I’ve recovered the data.
The current situation is that the drive will be recognized, and I can even ‘see’ the folders and files; but I cannot access the files to copy them off the drive, at least not with Windows Explorer. After poking around in a number of different forums I downloaded the WD Diagnostic tool and ran the test.
Drive specifics:
Model Number: WD Ext HDD 1021
Serial Number: [[DELETED]]
QUICK TEST
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 3 did not complete!
Status code = 07 (Failed read test element)
Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test)
SMART self-test did not complete on drive 3
EXTENDED TEST
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08-Too many bad sectors detected.
I really need to recover this data. I’m pretty tech-savvy, and would prefer to do it myself. What does the collective think is the correct approach? For what it’s worth, I have both Windows (7 and 10) and Linux computers, so if one of the OS’s is a better tool, I’ve got it.
Thanks in advance!
