1tb mybook won't power on

I have a 2008 1 tb mybook hard drive, it wouldn’t power on so I took it apart and noticed that as long as the power supply wasn’t connected to the hard drive the blue power lights come on, but as soon as it’s plugged back into the hard drive they shut off? Anyone know why? Or what I can do to get it to power on long enough to get my files off of there?
