3 TB USB drive - Video titles appear on some files, but 0 bytes; other video files are fine

After connecting my My Book Essentials 3 TB USB drive to my new WD TV Live Hub, Video titles appear on some files, but with 0 bytes; other video files are fine. (I can only tell this from looking at the drive on my PC: When I click to play these files, I get an error "file type not supported.)

Every file on my 2 TB USB drive appears fine.  I sure hope that this isn’t a compatibility issue with the 3 TB, because that why I replaced my WD TV Live!!!

Shut off indexing. It takes months to load the index.

Are you referring to indexing on my PC?  I don’t think that is an issue, since the files looked fine on my PC and I am not indexing the 2 drives on my WDTVLIVEHUB network (and all files were fine when connected to the PC.)

Or is there an indexing option within WD TV Live Hub?

When you first connect a drive, the WDTV has to scan it and see what media is on it, and what files are playable.

If it hasn’t completed its scan yet when you try accessing files, the WDTV will be confused, because its index doesn’t say whether the file’s playable.

You need to be patient and wait for the indexing to finish, and then all your files should play normally.

You’re correct, of course: I was anxious to see if this system worked with my 3 TB.  Now that I have some showing and some with 0 kb, should I unplug and plug in again to continue indexing?

I can’t see any major changes after shutting off the Media Library, unplugging, plugging in again, and leaving on over-night. I did see (last night) the HD blinking on occasion.  Is there anything I can do to force a rescan???

I just got a message that my 3 TB drive was full!  When I checked the properties, it reported the capacity as 750 GB!  And I checked 3 times to make sure this WD My Book Essentials 3.0 was capatible with the WD TV Live Hub: otherwise, I would have kept my WD TV Live!

Oh, things are going from bad to worse.

I just removed my 3 TB My Book Essentials from the TV Live Hub and connected it back to my PC: MY CAPACITY HAS CHANGED FROM 3 TB to 750 GB!!! And almost 1 TB of data is gone: just file and folder names with 0 Kb!!!

I won’t be sending WD a Christmas card this year…

Well, after receiving this response from WD Tech Support, I tried one more time to format the 3 TB drive.

"I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you; a 3 Terabyte (TB) My Book Essential doesn’t work with a WD TV Live HD Media Player, WD TV Live plus HD Media Player, and WD TV Live Hub Media Center due to the advance format, see the link below on how to resolve this and use it on your WDTV.

Answer Title: A 3 TB My Book Essential does not work with a WD TV Live, WD TV Live Plus or WD TV Live Hub

Well, I formatted the WD My Book Essentials 3.0 3 TB using 3 methods:

  1. The Quick Formatter included with the drive
  2. The Quick Formatter downloaded from the link above (which says for Windows XP)
  3. With Windows 7

Each and every time, it worked fine on my PC. BUT, the minute I connected it to my WD TV Live Hub, it was transformed into a 750GB drive!!!  And remained that way even when reconnected to my PC.  Therefore, DON’T TRY THIS SOLUTION OR YOU WILL LOSE DATA!  I will be spending the next few weeks replacing the lost data.

Well i seem to have the same problem.

All my videos from A to C function but after that none of them work, despite the title still there.

My 2 TB works fine, it’s only with my 3 TB I have problems.

The weird thing is: all videos were working initially.

Any solution to this problem??

Ok My situation is now exactly the same as you described.

My 3 TB storage has now become a 750 gb storage…

It seems only 2 TB work.

I’ll be replacing my 3 TB but I’m quite pissed I lost all my data…

Believe me, I tried everything possible and finally concluded: 3TB drives won’t work with the hub!
