6TB Red Pro in NAS overheats! Help!

Bought a 6TB Red Pro (7200rpm) for my 4-drive Synology NAS. It was overheating (going above 60 degrees) so the NAS was shutting down. Looking at the temps, all 3 other HDs are at perfectly acceptable temps. One is a Seagate and the other two are WD Reds (5400rpm). I even upgraded the fan in my NAS to one which displaces twice as much air.

My Red Pro (7200rpm) is still currently at 56 degrees and my other Reds (5400rpm) are at 46 and 44 degrees. But I’m still quite concerned it’s operating at near its temp ceiling.

Is the difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm units warranting such a huge difference in temperature? These are NAS drives so they should be able to work at acceptable temps in a NAS enclosure, no? Do I have a defective drive? Are these temps normal?

Hi Strat ,

Well WD Red drives with 7200 rpm spin faster and they run hotter and thus require more fan cooling.

Of course. I’m well aware of that but these are NAS drives! Therefore, they should be able to tolerate an enclosed environment without needing that much cooling.

So what you’re telling me is that it’s normal for a NAS drive designed for this purpose to overheat while any other drive I’ve ever used (none other were NAS drives) perform without issues???
