A common problem

Hello all,

I’m relatively new to the forum.  I currently have an issue with my systems and I cannot figure this out.  The issue involved network shares and a Windows 7 PC.  I have two Windows 7 PC’s and two TV Live Hubs and I have 4 external hard drives for movies and music (I like movies and music…couldn’t you tell?).  So here are my issues…if I connect the external drives to the Hubs, they work fine and I can do network shares for both boxes regardless of which hub they are plugged into.  If I plug the external drives into one of my Windows PC’s, it sees the drives as well.  However this is my main computer…so I don’t want to tie it up with all the drives.  So I bought another Windows 7 PC and planned on making this a “media server” but I wanted to connect to it through a network share.  I can connect to a network share to my main Windows 7 PC, but I cannot connect to the new one at all.

I have adjusted every setting that I can think of…even adjusted the advanced settings to what I’ve read, changed the folder permissions, even edited the registry values and the computer brower issues with a master browser.   I even recycled the power on all devices and still nothing. The Hubs DO NOT see the new PC.  The new PC can see the Hubs, but for some reason the Hubs are giving my new PC the cold shoulder.  I want everyone to be friends…but I cannot figure out how to get the Hubs to come to the table and see the new PC.  I’m wondering if my Antivirus is causing an issue…I have McAfee on both, but the new one is slightly different.  The old one sees my router and all the devices on it, but the new PC’s version of McAfee cannot see the router or the devices.

My router is a WD My Net 900, My external hard drives are WD My Books, I haven’t updated my firmware, but I don’t see that as being an issue as it sees the one PC, but not the other, they are both Windows 7 64 bit operating systems.

My brother even tried to work on the issue and got a media server to work, but I hate the way the media server works and it makes navigation to the movies almost impossible.  I like and prefer the network shares…any thoughts??  Sorry for the repetitive post as this issue has been mentioned numerous times, but I am stumped and have been working on this for weeks…on and off.

Thanks

Jeff

Tony,

Thank you for your response.  I’ve tried the suggestions on this page, but I will review them again.  This new computer is extremely stubborn.  I tried all of those things in that list and I can see the computer using net view, I see the shares on the computer as well, but the WD TV Hub is still fighting with the computer.  My other computer works fine…is connected and working fine.

I will keep let you know how I make out.

Thanks again.

Jeff

Ok…so here’s what I’ve learned…thus far.  My new computer never becomes the master browser…EVER.  I shut down all devices on the network, rebooted the new computer and only that one, when I check the net view, it shows all devices but none of them are the master browser.

So here’s my question…how do I make this computer have the ability to become the master browser?  I went into administrative tools and the “Computer Browser” service is set to automatic and is running, but it still won’t assign this computer as the master browser…any thoughts?

Thanks.

Jeff

You have a router that can become the Master Browser, and this is the best case situation because the router is always on, and PCs aren’t., so set it up.  My Asus router is the master browser since I added a hard drive directly to it.  But, I recently bought a WD My Net N750 to keep on hand for a spare, and for travel, etc.  When I set it up ,I noticed in the LAN setting I had an option to make the router the master browser.  Your router and mine are very much the same, and you should have the same adjustment. so do it.  I did not see this option until I had updated the firmware, so do that first if necessary.  Reboot the system afterward, and turn on router before any PCs.

Download and run the program found here to verify your router is the master browser.  http://scottiestech.info/2009/02/14/how-to-determine-the-master-browser-in-a-windows-workgroup/
