After the Firmware update on My Passport failed, this drive no longer shows up in Windows Explorer, nor in Disk Management. However the disk is still spinning when connected to a computer (Win10 and with the latest WD Firmware updater).
I then connected this My Passport drive to a second computer (Win7 pro). Hardware drivers were installed, followed by the message that the device is now ready to use, then… again nothing.
No answer, sorry, just a comment that this happened to me as well. And to many, many other people from what I’ve been able to see from browsing around the net.
WD is simply inept and incompetent when it comes to anything other than the actual, physical hard drive. They put out dysfunctional software and firmware which can even result in what you’ve seen - a dead, useless drive with your valuable data locked away and for which they take absolutely no responsibility once the product is out of warranty. This is despite the fact that their own software product has done the damage!
Do what I do - vote with your feet and stop buying WD rubbish.
Well, amazingly, a WD support person contacted me and provided a download link to a revised firmware updater. And it worked. Drive is now fully working WITH updated firmware.
