Appearance settings

My WD Live seems unable to “remember” the appearance settings I have chosen.  More specifically, I have selected HDMI, 1080p 60htz, 8 bit (8 bit is the only option that seems to be available for selection), and i have set the screen size at 95% (otherwise it seems to get chopped off at the edges).  This works great, I can watch videos with these settings in place, and everything is fine … until I come back the next day and turn back on the WD only to find that the settings have reverted to 720p.  I can tell right away that things have reverted because at 720p the 95% screen size shows black borders around the screen (I believe it also says “720p” in the upper right corner, although I think this is my TV confirming the signal it is receiving from the WD rather than the WD itself displaying this information).

Aside, right now most of my content is 720p anyway, so I don’t think I would be sacrificing anything if I left the setting at 720p and 100% screen size, but I am about to start ripping my BluRays (DVDs are done) and would like to experience those in 1080p rather than 720p (my TV is 1080p, connected to the WD with an HDMI cable).

This issue can be easily fixed by resetting the appearance settings every time I turn on the WD – while somewhat annoying this only takes a minute – but presumably the WD should “remember” the settings and keep them.  I can’t find any option to “lock” these setting in, other than selecting “Yes” when I make the change and get a message asking if I wish to accept the changes.  The changes then take effect, and everything looks great, but I’m back to 720p when I turn the box on again the next day.

Am I missing a step here?  Is there a different way to “lock” the settings in place?  Should I try a reset?  I am a bit hesitant about resetting because I am using a theme (the “Simple” theme) and am not sure if that will get dropped if I reset, but I’m willing to try if nothing else works and if this may fix things.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Doesn’t matter if the TV actually supports 1080p resolution at 60hz or not the setting won’t stick when set manually. What does stick or work is the auto setting. Auto will choose the appropriate resolution for each TV fine on my devices.

Resetting the WDTV should keep the default theme and your custom theme. You just can’t have more than one custom is all (limited memory on the smp I imagine).

EDIT: I can’t check on the screen size atm but will look later.

I’m not saying that it’ll help but you should upvote this.

Thanks, but I’m not sure I understand.  Where do I find the “auto” setting, or are you talking about a step within the process of setting the adio/visual output settings?  I do recall one option for “auto” but I believe it was a couple of steps further along ion the process, something like this:  HDMI > 1080p/60htz > auto > 8 bit.  I did select “auto” at this step in the process.  If there is somewhere else to use an “auto” setting please let me know.

If my TV is 1080p then presumably the auto setting should tell the WD to output in 1080p (obviously it will output in a lower format like 720P if that’s as high as the content itself allows, but the setting should be 1080p).  Or am I wrong, and the auto setting might choose 720p even though my TV could handle 1080p?  And if this is the case (auto may choose 720p even though my TV could handle 1080p), why would it not allow me to use the highest quality my TV allows, again subject to the quality of the content itself?  Or put another way, if it defaults to 720p, then when i watch 1080p content I will be limited to 720p even though the content is 1080p and the TV can handle 1080p, meaning the WD will be the only obstacle limiting the quality to 720p, which I don’t think is correct as the WD does handle 1080p.

Thanks again for helping me to understand and hopefully overcome this issue.

If you set it to Auto, the WD TV Live menu’s will be in 720, but if you play a video that is 1080p, it will then auto switch to the correct 1080p format.

At least that is the way it works for me.

You need to get a different HDMI cable, or try removing some of the plastic on your current one.  It seems far fetched, but it’s worked for everyone so far.

Thank you, this works perfectly now.
