I’ve ordered my pr2100 to replace a Seagate NAS that crashed. Next, I downloaded & read the 100+ pdf manual. (Yes, somebody really reads that stuff) Now I’m trying to set a game plan for when the drive finally arrives.
My main reason for purchasing the Pro Series model is Plex since I’ve been using the Plex Server on a desktop for years but I want to try other apps too. So let’s start a discussion about available Apps and please limit it to the Pro Series.
Where might an online list of available apps be found?
I welcome discussion of any and all Pro Series apps.
welcome. even these apps doesn’t work as they should. to be honest I’m really sorry for you, as for me personaly If I had a chance to buy NAS again I would go for synology instead of this device.
I now have Plex working for both videos and music. I’m have a premium account from Plex that I’m really happy I purchased a couple years ago. After using a desktop + Seagate NAS drive to make it work in the past, I’m impressed at how smooth it’s running as an app on the NAS opposed to how it worked on the desktop. We did have a hiccup while I was setting it up today when the WD server was down. But all’s good now.
Thanks for your input. I had a Seagate Central which crashed so I must say I’m not a fan. It was slow even though I have a GB connection. I’m looking forward to a happy relationship with my new NAS.
Here are the apps that show up in my list for the PR2100. Can anyone tell us about the apps other than what the blurb says? Let’s have input on whether they are a free trial or premium?

Plex: Video/Audio player that is unbeatable. It streams any music or video file. You can watch it on any device. It’s free but the premium is so much better and I believe it’s still a lifetime membership.
QuikFynd Server
SqueezeCenter
Transmission
WordPress: Free for creating web pages/sites. I use it on my webpage but not on my NAS
Plex has its weakness, it still relies on the server side transcoding. Dont know about the pro-series, but the dl-series cant transcode on the fly. Is the pro-series powerful enough? of course you dont have that problem if you have already converted the media suitable for plex. so… i wouldnt say that plex is unbeatable.
I quess you could try the directplay with a suitable app and client.
The Pro Series was built with Plex in mind. It has the power to transcode 4k video on the fly which I know any of the other WD series’ can’t do. Both WD & Plex were advertising it in preproduction. Since I was already a Plex user, I couldn’t wait as you might imagine.
My comment about it being unbeatable is referring to comparisons with other programs of this type. I don’t think I was clear when I made the statement. I know of no other that can play just about any type of video or audio file like Plex…but that’s taking into account the user has the correct equipment. Formerly, I was running it using a desktop as my server. This is the same desktop I use for security cameras around the house, reading my email, etc. So I’m happy to take this major item off it’s plate if you know what I mean.
