I bought my Wd My Cloud yesterday and did the initial setup. I started transferring the movies (230 GB) from my laptop to My Cloud and left it overnight thinking that it will be done by the time i would get up.
But when i wake up this morning i saw that only 27 GB has got transferred and its still running slow. I have connected my laptop via ethernet to the same router as Wd cloud but still the performance is this slow.
However my wifi connection is still on so would it override my ethernet connection?? I tried switching it (laptop wifi) off this morning to see if there is any difference in the speed but i think the connection only got slower as i couldnt even browse properly.
Any suggestions or advise would be highly appreciated !!
Thats not my screenshot, its another user who is trying to help me… I have not placed any screenshot.
Yep, my mistake.
GIve this a try.
Uninstall the WD Smartware and/or QuickView software – it’s not really needed unless you depend on it for drive monitoring (which can also be done via the Web UI) or for doing automated backups. (If that’s not the software you’re referring to, which software did you install?0
Open up an Explorer window (file browser, not web) and open a folder that’s on the My Cloud and try copying using ordinary Windows Cut & Paste.
If that doesn’t help, try turning off these services:
If you were speaking of my post earlier, yes I have a CAT6 cable running from My Cloud to my router, however my desktop and laptop are connected to my network by wifi.
When I backed up my desktop and laptop I checked Task Manager a couple of times and it showed my wifi speed as 72 Mbps once and 75 Mbps the next time I checked it. How fast was My Cloud in getting the info and writing it, I don’t know. Yes it took several hours on the backups, longer on my desktop because it has more on it.
The other day I sent myself a link to a short movie (0.98 GB) on My Cloud and as it downloaded to my desktop it showed 4 Mbps. The download was completed in just over four minutes.
My main reason for having the My Cloud is to back up my computers in case I have another hard drive go out. With the four terabyte I still have a lot of room for backup.
When comparing speeds, you must be careful with the abbreviations.
File transfer speeds (by Windows, at least) are reported in megabytes per second (MBps.) WiFi connection speeds are reported in megabits per second (Mbps).
Your reported WiFi speed as 72 Mbps is not actually a “speed,” that’s what’s called the “Negotiated data rate.” All that means is that the transfer will never exceed 72 Mbps even in sterile conditions. In practice, useful throughput is around half of that. 72 Mbps equates to 9 MBps.
Backups will always be somewhat slower than ordinary file transfers, as backups are compressed, checksummed, indexed, bundled, catalogued, etc. etc.
Transferring a 1GB movie in four minutes equates to about 33 megabits per second or 4 MBps. That’s about par for WiFi given your data rate shown.
Copying across using the file browser seems like a much better idea. Its much more user friendly and easier to track the details. Thanks Tony you have been a great help.
Also could you tell me something about remote accessing my WD cloud? i.e using say my phone’s 3G network to access my cloud from anywhere?? I know its there in the user manual which mentions about port forwarding and such stuff but i also read in one of the posts that it doesnt work? Could you please guide?
