Backing Up My Cloud EX2

Hi,

I was hoping I could get some help with my MyCloud EX2 (8TB) here. I am using RAID1, but would like to also back it up externally via USB to an external HDD that I normally store in a different location than the server. Just for fire, theft, or whatever ICE purpose…

When accessing the NAS via the IP, I can set the BACKUP option to ON and define from where it backs up to where. BUT, after a few GB the backup would always fail and stop.

What am I doing wrong? How does the external HDD need to be formatted?

I am using a Mac as the “brain” of the network, but I do not have anything stored on it.

Thanks.

I have the same problem.

A MyCloud can not write more than a few hundred MB to an USB drive without crashing its own USB stack, their firmware is broken, the USB-Port is essentially useless. It doesn’t matter how the HDD is formatted, the error is most likely in the 5 year old USB driver they are using.

You have only 3 options:

  • Try to install an alternative kernel with USB drivers that are not 5 years old
  • Wait 5 years until they release a firmware with drivers from 2018
  • Return it any by a different NAS from a different vendor.
