I have a very fundamental question that has likely been answered in previous postings. Essentially I use the EX2 as my primary storage/cloud access as per the default setup method. Nothing customized.

I am not a NAS expert by any means. What happens if the EX2 fails? What is the recommended backup approach? Should I mirror or split the 4TB into 2x 2TB losing have my storage? Any guidance at all would be appreciated.

If your My Cloud EX2 device fails and the drives are working fine then you can add the drives in a new enclosure and access your data.

You can refer to Raid Roaming knowledge base article to understand how can you move the drives from old enclosure to new:

In that case you can try to use data recovery software’s recommendation and if that doesn’t help you can try to contact third party data recovery companies.

Thank you for your replies. Coming back to my original question (I may be missing something fundamental), should I not be backing up the EX2 hard Drives in case they fail or is there already some form of redundancy built into the EX2?

Hello Allan_Read,

As you are using My Cloud EX2, so it comes with default RAID 1 configuration. In RAID 1 the NAS system is already in data protection mode and the capacity is divided in half. Half of the capacity is used to store your data and half is used for a duplicate copy. If one drive goes down your data is protected because it’s duplicated.

However, i would still suggest you to have a backup of your data on a different location as well if in case both the drive fails.

Thank you and sorry for my slow response. Do you have or do you know of another posting for a recommended backup hardware and process for the EX2 in case both drives fail? I was just going to buy a USB Seagate drive or similar and perform a manual backup regularly?

I have asked this for some time but don’t get any clear answer. At least that I understand
I have a EX2 Ultra in my office I want to set a regular back up to a cloud. Dropbox is my pref.
I want this in case some one breaks in and steals the EX2 Ultra . I want an easy way to down load a copy
How can I do that please
