I already have a NAS (Synology). Is it possible to have a WD My Cloud in a remote location and have it backup my NAS? Or is there any other product on the market that will do that?
This question comes up from time to time. The single bay My Cloud devices do not have an official way to backup its contents to a remote location. It will backup to an attached USB hard drive or local network location using Safepoint. See the following threads for more discussion on remote backup.

To have the remote NAS (Synology) backup to the My Cloud would involve having the Synology capable of remote backup, then configure the My Cloud to accept that remote backup (probably through configuring the My Cloud via SSH). One possible way, if the Synology supports FTP or SFTP is to have the Synolgy backup its contents to the My Cloud via FTP/SFTP. One can enable FTP on the My Cloud via the Dashboard. One would also have to configure their router the My Cloud is connected to for Port Forwarding of the FTP/SFTP port to the My Cloud.
Thanks! I will have a look at those threads. But I actually want to do the other way around then what you describe. My Synology NAS is at home, and I’m thinking of getting a WD My Cloud and put it at my parens place. And backup my NAS from my home TO the My Cloud at my parents. After some reading It looks like a My Cloud EX2 will work (?) But does it need to be WD products in both ends, or will My Synology work in the “source” end?
in a nutshell, as long as you can SSH/FTP to each other, then your options are infinite. FTP not secured at all, in case you have sensitive data.
Anyone can be source/destination. This applies to any NAS. Most NAS regardless of vendor are some light flavor of Linux
Some have the functionality build-in already, some don’t. For those that do not, a bit advance skills are needed to set ssh/users/etc.
To copy/synch files over SSH, use SCP/SFTP/rsycn.
Steps you will need:
- Set SSH on on both NAS
- Forward ports on routers/FW
- Set DDNS on routers, if need to access by name.
- Create rsync script
- Create cron job, or run manually, up to you.

It may be possible to have the Synology back up to a single bay My Cloud, but it depends on the Synology options. If it can backup via FTP or SFTP then it is possible to backup the Synology to the My Cloud. From my post:

The higher order My Clouds (such as EX/DL series} have this capability, so find their user manual from WD Support (the two series use same user manual) and read up on this . You can download the PDF.
Hi. I also have a Synology 218+ and just purchased a My Cloud Home Duo for another purpose. It’s on the same local network. Can someone can help me set up the WD My Home as a bakup for my Synology NAS ? Thanks a lot to all of you.
The My Cloud Home line is completely different than the My Cloud line of devices. It has different features, options and operating system than the My Cloud line. See the dedicated subforum for the My cloud Home Duo.
