I have two users on MyCloud. User 1 has a desktop and a laptop, user 2 also has a desktop and a laptop. So, how do I back up these users. Do they each get two ‘shares’ and backup one of their PCs to a distinct share? Since there users can see and share all files perhaps another way is to have them each backup to the ‘public’ share. Thoughts . . THANKS
Hello,
Depending on the software that you are going to use for the backup, if it’s WD Smartware, it will create a share for each computer.
Thanks, so let me see if I understand this. User A has three PCs and User B has two PCs. So, as the admin I create the two users and send them the link. They establish an account and for each PC. And somehow they will have a share that is automatically created by Smartware for each PC which can be remotely accessed? Thanks again. Beyond this, I find the File History in Windows 10 more easily understood than the WD software. However, I might (rarely) need remote access to a file and therefore it seems that the WD software has an advantage because I cannot see how to remotely access files using Windows 10 File History. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If using the WD My Cloud included Smartware software each computer running the Smartware program will have its own folder created by the Smartware program within the SmartWare folder/Share on the My Cloud. For example it may be:
\wdmycloud\SmartWare\computer1
\wdmycloud\SmartWare\computer2
\wdmycloud\SmartWare\comptuer3
If one chooses to use a 3rd party backup program on each computer then one can create Shares either through the WD My Cloud Dashboard user interface or through their file manager program (Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder) and point the 3rd party backup program on each computer to their respective Share/folder on the My Cloud. If one uses the Dashboard to create the Share one can restrict or password protect that share and require both the Smartware or 3rd party backup program to require a username/password to access and backup content to that Share.
You can read the Smartware User Manual for more information on how to use the Smartware program.
