I purchased a WD TV live plus the other day from Bestbuy here in Ottawa after reading their flyer, Page 10 which clearly states "stream Netflix to your HD TV. If you do not believe me , have a look. Full page ad http://bby.ca.flyerservices.com/cached_banner_pages/publication.aspx?BannerName=BBUY
After spending lots of time trying to get this to work, a few calls to the help line and finally told it does not work in Canada, only the US ? I was very confused. Then I read many posts here on this very subject.
What I can now understand is , DO NOT BELIEVE the adâs you read. Just take them as a general suggestion that the product may or may not do what they say in print. This is not a slam at the WD company as I suppose I should have looked at the US packaging which states in US ONLY in fine print. Guess we Canadians, 33 Millions plus inhabitants do not deserve Country specific packaging.
SO why does WD sell this device in Canada if it does not support Netflix ?
Without this support , the device is no different than the WDTV Live.
Guess I am just another stupid consumer that reads, believes the Adâs , believes what the sales staff say and purchases a product that does not do what I read and was told.
I should just be quiet and accept these facts.
Thank you WD & Bestbuy for allowing me to purchase this device.

Because BestBuy stopped selling the Live quite some time ago?
The âdifferenceâ is that the Live Plus is available and the Live isnât, except for some old stock stores might still have kicking around.
And you canât really be surprised that the BestBuy goons making up the blurb about it just lift the wording straight from WDâs promotional materials. Yes, they should have noticed the âU.S. onlyâ, and included it in the ad, or left the NetFlix bit out altogether, but in the end the box is clearly marked U.S. only. The information was still there before the purchase was made.
As always, Caveat Emptor! Here are the only devices licensed to stream NetFlix in Canada.
"And you canât really be surprised that the BestBuy goons making up the blurb "
Why would I not be surprised?
I guess I am the only one that buys into what the ads say.
Again, yes I believe I was duped and yes I can return it for a refund.
Love this forum and the very helpful posts.
I will keep the device and use it for streaming videos.
Best Regards.
Why does nobody use the salutation, âAverage regardsâ?
Why is it taking so long for WD TV to come out with a canada upgrade ⌠if us netflix is supported then it should not be that big a deal to get canada netflix workingâŚ
BTW i had the same issue at Tiger direct, they told me that the WD will play netflix in canadaâŚ
Couple things:
-
Best Buy does not spend money on her staff. I find them to be the most uninformed of any of the Canadian Electronic retailers. Mostly just kids working part time it seems. Youâll get better advice at Costco.

Netflix told me that the problem was not with WD, but with the Netflix authentication system. I spoke to a guy in the US about the Live Hub and he said that it was on their âto doâ list but it was prioritized behind the mainstream boxes. Apparently Canada has a different log in system. I have no idea if this is true, but he seemed to know more about it than me.
On another note, my PS3 doesnât want to work with Netflix either. Thatâs cause mine isnât a North American system.
They make is SO hard to actually pay for content in Canada, and then they wonder why Canadians use torrents so much.
Sigh.
I bought mine in tiger direct also, and yesâŚitâs the same storyâŚ
I actually spent about 30 min with netflix support and then another 1.5 hours with WD supportâŚthen got my called bumped
up to âsecond tierâ supportâŚand was told it was that my router is blocking it. I searched around this forum and yesâŚ
âthe truth is out there!â
So, if this post is the âofficial wordââŚitâs sad
