I got this HDD to put in my new build, and the first thing I noticed is that it makes a faint “fluttering” sound every 8 seconds or so.
It’s not extremely loud, but it’s quite noticeable in a quiet room. It is very consistent. The sound lasts about five seconds with three seconds of silence I between.
At first, I thought it was just normal read/write sounds, but then I started listening and it repeated perpetually even when I wasn’t accessing the HDD.
Is this normal behavior? Is it the result of some kind of power saving feature? Can it be disabled? My computer is whisper quiet except for the strange chirping/fluttering sound coming from my HDD.
I did a scan with HDTune and everything looks fine. I don’t believe that the sounds are indicative of a failing drive. But I don’t know – I just want it to stop!
