I would like to restrict, if possible, the Public share to read-only access.
I don’t want anyone to accidentally delete files in this share.

Not possible.
Don’t put stuff in Public, if you can’t trust your network users not to delete stuff.
If you are talking about the default Public Share, the official answer is no you cannot set it to Private or control who has access to it.
Its a common complaint going back YEARS that WD has refused to address. The ability to set the main Public Share to Private.
Unofficially if one uses the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon upper right, they’ll find several past discussions on attempting to either hide the main Public Share, or control its access, using SSH.
