Ok,
I have videos in the Shared Videos. They currently have a .m4v extension and I changed one
of the rascals to have a .mp4 extension.
When I start iTumes on one of my macs, the MBL ( aka nas) shows in the left panel.
If I click on one of the m4v files it plays the sound and a window with a large stylized
film strip in the middle is displayed ie no video is displayed.
When I start the Apple TV2, it sees the mac running iTunes( In the Computer column) but the movies are presented
as music and no video is displayed. I have renamed one of the videos to have an .mp4 extension but
it does no good.
So, does anyone know why the Files stored in the Shared Video show up as Music on the Apple TV 2?
Is it possible too play movies stored on the MBL via the Apple Tv 2, if so how?
Thanks for any insights…
Jerry
Make sure you re-index the files via the Twonky interface…

TaIn’t clear to me why Twonky would have anything to do with iTunes… (but I did
trigger a re-index for Twonky but the behavior did not change).
A quick scan of the user MBL doc showed talk about music but I did not find
any thing related to Movies.
Seems like someone could offer a definitive answer…
Thanks
Jerry
I was still thinking about your OTHER post where you said you were using TWONKY and that your device was seeing M4Vs as Audio. Pardon my mistake.
Apple-licenced iTunes Servers (such as in the MBL) use Apple’s proprietary DAAP protocol, which is “Digital AUDIO Access Protocol.”
As such, iTunes servers do NOT serve VIDEO files.

Is that a definitive enough answer?

Ok…your explanation makes sense
It is possible to use the Apple TV2, but the path is convoluted.
I mount ‘Public’ on one of my macs that has the mac app ‘ServeToMe’ installed. I add
the Shared Videos to the directories that ServeToMe scans.
My iPad/iPhone has the companion App ‘SendToMe’ installed.
Running SendToMe allows me to pick a video from the Shared Video directory to
view on the iPad/Iphone. SendToMe can then redirect the video stream to the
Apple TV2 via AirPlay. Viola!
