As topic, I can see all folders that I share but can only see media in certain folders.
I have 2 folders shared, one called “TV” the other “Movies”, I can see everything in “TV” but nothing in the “Movies” folder, both contain .avi and .mkv files.
I moved the Movies folder into the TV folder and everything was visible and worked fine.
How did the content of the “movies” folder get there? By any chance, idd you copy or move the files from another folder that did not have sharing priviledges?
I had this problem yesterday, and what I found is you should only have 1 folder ( movie ) you should not have sub folders, or folders within folders. I hope I’m making sense, after I did this everything was fine, and was able to read and support all kinds od formats I have, eg mkv. mp4. wma. and so on.
but naturally - I as understand you observe you TV screen while checking folders ?
if that is so - then please remember : that you determine the type of contents [FILM v MUSIC v PHOTO] at the very beginning of goin down in folders . And that means that within FILM folder you would not see “a photo” in “a deeper folder” [what is obvious] .
… the above in other words means : you should have “a movie file” within the folder that you are chasing in FILM mode !
Try renaming the folder from Movies to something else. Just in case there is a hidden special character in the folder name that may be preventing it from being seen, create a new directory with a different name, then move your sub-folders and files into the new folder.
I have a similar issue. I have a network share on my PC, Win7 Home. I do use user security, that is no problem. In one folder, I had 59 folders and in each a movie. Though I could only see 33 of them with the WDTV. I took 55 of the video files by themselves, no folders and put them in a newly created folder that I shared and still only could see 33 files. I read how some people could see hundreds. Wish I could. It is a pain in the backside to have to create a whole bunch of shares and only put a few files in each because the device cannot see all the folders/files in one share.
Forgot to add that I use Avast AV and even turned it off. Still the same issue.
I can see thousands, but it’s too slow to manage, so I keep it to less than 100.
AVAST *had* a major bug that would do exactly what you describe. I’m not sure if “turning it off” is enough.
Also, check the FILES and make sure the permissions are correct. If you have windows set to do so, they should inherit the FOLDER’s permissions, but just double check that.
Success! Thanks TonyPH12345. Just disabling the scanning engines did not work but when I uninstalled Avast I could see all the folders and files. I then installed Microsoft’s Security Essentials and all was still good.
I already had my security set correctly on the files, even reset inheritance and pushed the security down to the whole folder structure but that did not help originally. It was Avast.
Folders in folders works for me. I have over 600gb in one shared folder and it works fine.
It might be timining out on your system. Do you have a newer fast drive? Older slow drive might be taking too long to scan it and report back.
Kill all your shared folders then reshare them out. Do a full reboot of all NETWORK devices at your place. I would boot/power on a router first. Then the main PC then your WDTV unit. Wait a minute or so between powering up those devices. Or you might try different boot up orders.
