Cannot restore WD My Passport backup files on my factory recovered Acer

I’m desperate!! I backed up my Acer Aspire 7535 C:/ drive (Windows 7) to my WD My Passport Ultra. I then used the factory recovery discs to bring my computer back from a problem. I then re-installed my WD My Passport Ultra on the clean computer and found that when I got to “Restore” in the “Backup” app my original backup did not appear. I know the backup is there because I can see it when I access what’s on the external drive through My Computer F:/ drive.(USB port) Can anyone tell me how to restore even some of those files… If I can’t get them, years of work is gone. It’s frustrating to see the original backup just sitting there taunting me with all my information!!! I hope someone can walk me through getting those files on my newly restored computer. You will ever be in my debt!!

Hello Elizabeth_318,

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this.

Thanks for writing… I opened a “case” with WD on line and they just sent
me an email that says the same thing you just did. “Contact Technical
Support” and “Join WD Community”. Seems very strange that a backup device
would not be able to take that back up and NOT put it on a recovered or new
computer. I know, I should have researched what capabilities that the WD
Pass Port Ultra had before purchase. I guess there should be another term
for “back up” when it can’t send the files to a new machine.

Appreciate you comments! I’m really nervous about getting my info back.

When you see the backup(s) showing in F drive (WD Backup.swstor) have you tried opening it (i.e. double clicking) and then User, History, etc.until you see the various folders listed and then opening them and copying the individual files to (say) the desktop? After factory reset, presumably you will also need to reinstall any programmes that created the files before you can open them.

I was on the phone with WD support for a few hours. That’s exactly what I’m doing right now. She took control of my computer and STILL couldn’t restore the files on my newly recovered Acer. So she suggested that I copy the backup file from the WD Passport directly onto my computer in a separate folder. I’m waiting for the copying to finish (it’s going to take a few hours) to see if I can access the files in newly installed programs. I asked her if the files were encrypted and she said they weren’t. I could just open them in the program in which they were created. Fingers crossed this helps!! EVERYTHING is on that Pass Port and if I can’t access it, I’m really screwed! Thanks for the reply…

She should have advised you to try copying/dragging one file to the desktop and trying that. At least that way you wouldn’t have hours to wait. Could you try it now? One file?
Don’t forget to install the programmes they were created with. Hope it all works out well for you.

Ok… I’m really stuck. All of the files (Word, Excel, etc.) that I want to restore to my computer have “_LAST” at the end of the file name. I assume that WD Backup puts that extension on it. It prevents me from opening the files I need. Copying the entire backup into a folder on my recovered Acer Desktop did not solve the problem of getting these critical files on my laptop. I cannot just “drag and drop” the files into the programs as WD Telephone Support suggested today. The frustrating thing is that I can SEE the needed backup on the WD Pass Port Ultra, I just can’t get the WD Backup program to access it. It seems to me that these files are encrypted in some way and CAN’T be restored unless I use the WD Backup program. WD Telephone support couldn’t help me with it either even after using remote access. I guess I need a programmer to help me migrate these files onto my computer in a usable config. Any more thoughts?? I’m even more desperate now!

I too get _LAST as a suffix if I open files in History you need to open Volume.
As an experiment I plugged in My Passport and it opened in Windows Explorer.
Without copying the entire WD Backup.swstor to the desktop I double clicked on it and proceeded double clicking folders this way:
My username
Long filename with caps and lowercase
Volume with four characters separated by hyphens (NOT History)
Users
Shortened version of my name
This presented me with various folders AppData, Contacts, Documents etc.
Chose Documents folder and double clicked
Double clicked a sub folder at random until NORMAL files were listed.
In my case a few OpenOffice files listed a OpenDocument Text
Dragged to desktop and doubled clicked and OpenOffice duly opened them.

So try going that route and see if that works (make sure that Word, Excel etc. is installed).

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your reply. I found the files I need under a
different volume on the Pass Port. They all have the right icons and
extensions!!! Wooo Hooo! Now I found out that I can’t get my Outlook
calendar program to copy/import the files into it. I’m trying Google
calendar and seeing if I can put those files into it. Wish me luck! And
thanks again for all your help!

Glad you were able to find the files you needed.
Obviously I don’t know what type of files they are or why you want to import them into the Outlook Calendar.
However, have you looked at Options or Manage add-ins under the Settings options (the cog icon)?
Had a quick glance and there are quite a number of add-ins that may be helpful.
Good luck!
