Hello,
I’ve spent the past 5 hours trying to get my WDTV Live to find the shared folders on my computer. I’ve looked on here and on the web and tried many different things. Here is what I have found out:
When I have public file sharing turned off, all I get is a “users” folder and that tree opens up a “default” folder that contains no media. When I have public file sharing turned on, I get a “public” folder under “users” and I can see media I put in those public folders.
I have a folder shared and am pretty tech savvy so I am pretty sure I have it all set up. I followed the directions in the manual, that did not work, I tweaked them, still nothing, followed a web video, and still nadda.
What information do you need from me or what would you like me to try first?
Thanks in advance.
Player model, firmware, OS? PC and WDTV in the same workgroup (not homegroup)?
I figured out a fix, not sure if this is the best or not but this is what I did.
I noticed that my shared folder did not have the “everyone” permission. So I created an “everyone” and gave them full permission for all. It did erase the three other groups because I was at the root level.
You can share it like that or setup a specific username and password. I run multiple subnets for security reasons at home. My STB media devices like the SMP have a special username/pass so they all access the same folders off my NAS. Problem with letting it see root and whatever else you have is it will create a .wdtv folder if you have any pictures or media like a good little box does.
Remember to hold the power button for around five seconds to power it down and not a standby state as well.
