Can't connect to MyBook World on Mac

I have a 1TB MyBook World (white light) that I’m having issues with on my mac.

I’ve always used this drive by connecting it directly to my mac via Cat5 cable. It’s mounted as a shared drive, and I’ve been able to use it without problems. I’ve had it for about a year.

As of a couple days ago, it shows up in finder as a shared drive, but will not connect at all. Oddly enough, I can still access the admin panel through my browser, and the mac is still able to make its time machine backups. Finder just absolutely refueses to connect to it, which renders it pretty much useless except strictly as a backup drive. I have other importatn documents that I stored on there that I can no longer access.

Any ideas on what could cause this issue?

Hi there, I would be unable to tell you the cause of the issue but I would recommend you to try click here to reset the unit, and then here to map the drive on the networkagain.

Wow, thanks. That worked.

That’s extremely weird. I’ve never had to do that before. The drive worked from the beginning without me doing that. It just stopped connecting out of the blue.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. Worked like a charm.

Anytime, you are very welcome! I am happy to know it worked.

I accidentaly disconected my hard drive while I was tranfering files. I was having a terrible time connecting to it after that. Your post helped me so much, thank you .

i have a similar problem with my WE2 4Tb.

my mac wont see it

when it starts up the bottom led is on, after a few seconds the top led flashes on the off, and shortly after the bottom led goes out.

i have tried all kinds of things, including hitting the reset which does not seem to do anything…

please help!

its ok folks, i sorted it.

The problem with the solution expressed here is that it resets all the passwords and user permissions to default.  Then you can access the drive on MAC OS 10.7 Lion until you reset the passwords and user permissions.  If you put any user permission other than public on the My Book, you lose the ability to mount the drive on your MAC.  This must be something related to Lion because it has no problem with access on a PC or ever by my iPad.  Any other thoughts or fix suggestions?

As far as I know, Western Digital is still working in getting the drives and utilities to work with Lion, so far they do not guarantee any of their products to work, Hopefully, they will soon post an update note through here that will make all WD products Mac OS X 7 compatible.

I apreciate you are sharing your positive experience, I am happy that my post helped you to resolve the issue.

I’ve been having the same problem for a while (“it shows up in finder as a shared drive, but will not connect at all.”… “Finder just absolutely refueses to connect to it”) but my itunes plays all the music which are in the hard drive. And I also realized that there’s a file named _VUC69~7 which is in almost in all the folders inside, I don’t known if this is part of the problems or maybe a bug.

Any ideas on how I resolve this issue?
