I’ve connected a HDD directly to the WD HDD and im using thr Cloud service to access the WD HDD remotely via a tablet. My problem is that everytime i load a video using the vlc app or HDvideos app, it comes up for half a second then closes.
Hope you guys can help me out, thanks for reading.
I’ve tested several file types including mp4. I’ve also tested other video files and they worked fine with the vlc app. The issue I face is specifically when i try to watch a movie from the WD HDD remotely via My cloud.
When you say “remotely” do you mean while connected to a network outside of your local network that contains the My Cloud? How are you connecting to the My Cloud? With the WD My Cloud app? Or with MyCloud.com?
On my Android devices (both phone and tablet) I typically have no problems playing video either from the local network or from a remote network, using the WD My Cloud for Android app to find the media, then when selecting a video file I launch it within MX Player.
When streaming media remotely its possible for streaming to fail due to various broadband issues including the upload speed of the broadband at the My Cloud end and the download speed at the receiving end (in your case the hotel). It is possible the broadband connection you are using at your hotel is limiting the download speed or using some form of QoS that is impacting the WD app. As a possible test, are you able to stream from other services like Netflix, Hulu, or even YouTube while at the hotel?
Speed tests typically only test one end of the connection not both ends. One would need to run a speed test at both ends. There is also the issue of latency at one or both ends which may factor in.
The wild card is the remote location (in the hotel or other public location) may be using QoS or similar to prioritize the traffic through the remote router. One may also have QoS configured on their home network. For example at my local library a speed test shows plenty of speed, yet any time I try to download large files on their network, their router’s QoS kicks in and slows my download down so as to not over saturate other’s online experience.
