So, I set up my 3 TB Clous and all seems good - I can even access it from my phone with the mobile app - However, I have a question regarding the storage of my data - Since I do not have a static IP at my house, how exactly is the My Cloud s/w redirecting me from a remote site to the My Cloud at my house - I ask becasue I sincerely hope all of my data is not simply being duplicated at some WD Cloud Based Data Server located who knows where - I cannot imagine this is the case because obviously it defeats the entire purpose of the product - I have used logmein before to do remote trouble shooting, but it seems like I had someone at the site run config or something to tell me what specific IP they had most recently been assigned - Anyway, happy with the product, just wanting to make cetain of exactly what it is doing -
If your router is running UPnP, then the WD can detect when the outside IP address changes, at which time your NAS updates WD’s systems with the new IP address.
I’m not really sure what it does when you’re NOT using UPnP – probably just a periodic update.
When you pair your mobile device, your device remembers that unique name above, and thus then can connect directly to your NAS via the internet (as long as Port Forwarding connection is established.)
If your device is using RELAY mode, then your data travels through WD’s servers (but is not stored there.)
Wow, thank you very much Tony - This all makes sense and I do feel better about knowing the data I am accessing remotely is on MY NAS as opposed to a duplicate of my data being stored without my permission - VeryCool - Thanks again and have a good one -
