I just got my Live Plus this week. This is the 3rd “media center” device I’ve owned and so far it is the best.
First I had a D-Link DSM-520, which output 1080i (nice), but was horribly buggy and unstable. Members of the forum were screaming for a firmware upgrade, but D-Link wouldn’t deliver.
Second I used a Wii. Very stable and reliable. Biggest disadvantage was 480i output. Trick modes were kind of klunky with a Wii remote, but the ability to drag the little ball in the play bar to any point in the video was really nice.
Now the WD Live Plus. 1080p (awesome), 4 speeds fast-forward and rewind, awesome Netflix app. Mostly a very positive experience except for the following comments:
-
The 10-minute skip forward/back function seems to only work when playing video from a network share (I didn’t attach a drive directly to the box - it would probably work with that too). It doesn’t work in Netflix, and doesn’t work through PlayOn.
-
Trick modes are unstable in PlayOn. It seems to play OK if you just let it play, but try to fast-forward and it just ‘kicks you out’ of the video and doesn’t remember your resume point.

I hope WD will offer some of the additional services PlayOn offers natively (especially Hulu), so the PlayOn issues are less of a concern.
