Computer not recognized by WD TV Live

Ok guys and gals , looking for a little help here please.  I have everything hooked up to my WD TV.  I have a wired connection going from the WD TV to my Netgear router(DD WRT).  Currently there is one wired computer(Win XP) hooked up to the router and I also have a laptop wirelessly connected(Win Vista).  The WD TV finds the wireless laptop with no issues but fails to recognize the other computer.  I have disabled all firewall, looked through all the DD WRT settings, tried sharing the folders which doesn’t work because it doesn’t even recognize the computer itself.  Does anyone have any suggestions for something else to try?  Is there a setting or something Im missing?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure you’ve done all this (and in particular, watch out for Windows Live ID asisstant):

What do you mean by “Tried Sharing the Folders?”

What I meant by that was, that I went into XP and located the folders that I wanted the WD TV to recognize and made sure that they were “shared”(right click/properties/share/share this folder).

Can your Vista laptop see the XP Shares?

I didnt try that, as I have never had a need to share anything with the laptop.  Heres a stupid question.  Do I need to set up a network through XP in order for the WD TV to recognize it, or should it recognize it automatically?

Yes, the XP machine needs to be fully configured to use the same network as the WDTV.

Ok so thats probably my problem then, I need to go into networking and set up a network.  I’ll give it a shot when I get home.  Thanks for your help.

No problem.   Let us know how it goes!

And make sure you name your workgroup “WORKGROUP” (also in the FAQ among other, useful advice).

Got it up and working last night with no issues.  I dont know why I thought that the player would magically recognize my computer without first creating a network lol.  Oh well, at least it was an easy fix.  Thanks for all the help guys, it is much appreciated.

Hi all:

This seems to be a very useful forum.

I got a new WD HD TV Live Plus and having problems with WD finding the network shares.   It doesn’t recognize the main server (madison) on and off.    The WD unit is on the wired 10/100 ethernet.

Madison is on the home network workgroup and is my main server at home.  The D drive where the media is shared.  All other laptops on the network (my work laptop, my wife’s netbook) can access the madison disks and printer attached to madison w/o any trouble.

Regarding my network setup… from the wall there is an ethernet jack coming out going to an ethernet switch, which connects to (i) a replaytv and (ii) the WD unit.  I can access the replaytv w/o any problems from madison, thus suggesting that the network switch there is working fine.

It is not that WD cannot find madison … it does once ina  while and does so after quite some time often & requires several reboots.

Can someone suggest an easy way to make sure WD can find the network shares?

Thanks!
