Just confirming, with 1.02.25 and reset to factory settings, you still have problems?
I don’t know. The reason for that is the factory reset, and subsequently no ability to access the box. Even the IP stated on the EX4 is giving ‘connection timed out’.
Tried an ethernet cable on the DHCP connection on the relevant computer. Connected, but could not join AD, as is obvious. Then tried to place the EX4 on AD switch, and could not connect as I had when I originally bought the box.
Tried again with cable on the computer; will not connect.
Not a joke . . .
EDIT: I have finally accessed the dashboard, after messing with ethernet cables. Now to see if I can actually join the AD network. However, look at the image, where it states that ‘managing existing local users and Shares will not be possible during this time’.
Does this categorically imply that what I thought was an error is actually not, and means that supporting Active Directory is false. Why on Earth would I purchase on object that can’t use its own users and be available over the network. My Seagate Business Cloud 4TB NAS does both.
I am probably going to RMA this EX4 if Support can’t help.
Now another problem: after I had accessed the dashboard, I changed, as is offered (!) the option to have a fixed IP and then entered the relevant information. This is possible without joining the AD domain.
The EX4 is now accessible by all computers, but, so far, only opens with the admin EX4 account.
That’s because I cannot open the dashboard to create another user. I can ping the EX4, and open the drives, and the EX4 is shown on the Network part of Windows Explorer under its IP address. But, no browser will open the dashboard. Even the WD icon on the desktop fails; even having the correct address.
Before I reset the EX4, I had it on the AD and it showed as a computer on the Network. It only shows as a Media and a Storage object currently.
If you’re accessing the device by name (in your dashboard setup or browser) you need to flush your DNS cache.
Or are you saying you can’t even browse to it by IP address?
Can access the drive, cannot access the dashboard via a browser. Neither by name nor by IP.
Rebooted the machine by force. Then the EX4 allowed access to the dashboard. What worked before on each computer with regard to mapping now does NOT.
I repeat, I cannot access any computer by mapping a network drive. Of course, this was a no-brainer when AD was activated.
There was, according to my phone call yesterday, supposed to be a Second Level call this morning. It never happened.
So, cannot say as yet what one can expect by believing what is written on the packaging. What I do know is that if I have the update to the latest firmware, as was confirmed yesterday, one can assume that a domain with fixed IP addresses for the network is allowed but only with no Global Access.
Why?
The other thing is that no allowance is made for anything other than DHCP at the beginning. So, I had to put the EX4 cable into a NIC on my main workstation.
Then I could access the dashboard and reach Settings/Network and change to a fixed IP, and I had to save that whilst the EX4 was on the DHCP NIC. So, then I couldn’t, except by rebooting, find the EX4 until after I’d moved the cable to the switch, which is where all my computers, and the Seagate NAS, are found by AD.
Why can’t Seagate and WD have a CD/DVD set up which asks what, how and where the NAS will attach to? Does that not sound simple? The Seagate instruction says NOT to place the ethernet onto the computer, but I couldn’t get that NAS to work until I ignored that advice.
Luckily, both are now on Global Access, but, with the EX4, there are the utterly irritating problems of network access. Not what I paid for.

Of course there isn’t. There’d be no other way to configure an address. :smileyvery-happy:
There’s no reason you should have had to plug it into your workstation – I’ve never done that with any NAS I’ve owned.
Not sure why this is an issue for you.
It is to do with the fact that I never use DHCP. I use fixed IPs because it’s a more logical usage. And, it’s not rare with IT techies, either. Given that I use servers and am on an AD network.
Therefore, why there is no original way, by using a CD/DVD, to recognise whatever the NAS is, is illogical.
Now I have been informed by Second Level Support that the update has not arrived. The dates offered are false and gave me hope when there was none.
Therefore, I shall be emailed when the update arrives, and then I hope that my AD problem with fixed IP v DHCP disappears.
To my mind, when one purchases the EX4 there should be an instruction to enter into the setup procedure exactly where the box is set within AD. After all, the packaging states that Windows Active Directory 2003, 2008 and 2012 is supported. It isn’t at this time.
Is this so difficult, that what was promised is not yet here and it’s the start of the third week of January?
I have a Seagate Business NAS, that is attached to the AD and is visible on the Web. I have ordered, and it is still on back-order, a WD 4TB NAS, but, according to my local store, I can have a Seagate by tomorrow. What do you think my next purchase will be? Sad, right?
Note that, currently, I cannot even access the other folders in my EX4, that I created, and were visible with the box attached to the AD network. What a mess!! It is so nice to access the EX4 miles from home, but if I can’t access the private folders, then that is a major failing.
Time that the firmware was fixed, and that what is written on the packaging is honoured. As the image earlier in this long sequence shows, attaching to the AD removes the ability to reach the EX4 from one’s tablet, smart phone, laptop, usw. That is not what a NAS is supposed to be.
Still silence from WD regarding firmware update.
I do wonder why WD can’t remedy what comes easily on a Seagate NAS?
I really don’t want the bother of buying something else. At least I can access the WD EX4 via Explorer on one machine.
FYI: the Seagate NAS I bought for my daughter did not work on a MacBook Pro. I wouldn’t suggest that you try!
