Dashboard items apparently missing

I am trying to add and remove users, and I look at the posts on WDC Knowledge Base so that I can follow along.

What I am finding is that on my dashboard, using Firefox if that’s a concern, there are, for example, no addition or subtraction icons on the page.

Hence, cannot do what I want. Is this to do with the browser or a fault with the dashboard? I have Firefox as my dominant browser since Internet Explorer is a useless browser (IMO).

Do you have ADBlock Plus firefox addon installed and enabled?

If yes, try disabling it, restart browser, and try again.

Surely you still have internet explorer so why not just try that, even though its likely to be down to something else.

I think it’s weirder than the browser. Here is an image taken of Users and Cloud Access. Note the difference between users.
Note that I had several conversations with upper level techies at WD before I was able to join my EX4 to the AD.

No wonder I can’t create access from a mobile device, since I can’t create a code with those members on the Cloud Access side: they are domain users, true, but the proper users are in the Users list.

A mess, indeed!

Hold on. If you’re using AD, then aren’t the credentials and users the purview of the AD master, not the EX4?

Tony:
One would think so, but there is a confusion between them. The Users are there, but the domain users arise under Cloud Access, and when one tries to produce a Code for the mobiles, there is a statement that they’re not to be found.

I can’t determine why this is, but then, of course there was a 500 Server error where, when the EX4 was restarted, these differences suddenly appeared.

Note, too, that, on the image, the ‘Device user not found’ is followed by (400015), which means that I have no mobile access whatsoever.

This problem is utterly frustrating.
No matter that it was the Upper Echelons of support who, with their instructions, enabled the EX4 to become part of my Active Directory. (The latter is run under Windows Server 2008R2 Enterprise.)

My network runs properly, and all computers are regularly updated.

Given that information, why are there no addition/subtraction icons under any heading in the dashboard, and any browser on any of my Workstations? Plus, the difference in names between Users and Cloud Access that are shown in the previous posts image.

Apparently, one cannot return a WDEX4, and having an object that purports to be usable on the Internet as a MyCloud, and won’t is ridiculous.

I can’t add users, I can’t delete users, I can’t create codes for ‘invisible’ users. What gives??

So you don’t even see the +/- icons on the shares page?

Are you able to try reset the device to factory settings and configure it all over again without AD support?

If you could, it would be interesting to see if it was the integration with AD that is causing all this heartache and the device itself and its access work correctly.

At least you can establish if this is not any issue with the hardware itself so a future firmware fix could potentially address these AD integration issues.

Re Shares page, the +/- are there, but that’s no good, since I have already entered the folders I want. Lacking +/- on the Users and the Cloud Access; the most important places.

Re ReSet; I don’t believe it’s the hardware, but it must be the OS since that is the only source of malfeasance here. I could reset the EX4, but why should that be necessary? It won’t lose the folders, but that’s not so important, since I have that stuff elsewhere, and I wanted the EX4 to allow me to share with friends (those NOT in the AD Users).

That latter statement makes me wonder if the EX4 will only allow me to use AD names, but that’s a defeating situation for any company that wants ‘interested parties’ to see information, isn’t it?

But that’s what I’m talking about.   Maybe I don’t understand AD as I thought I did, but if you’re joined to AD, you should NOT be adding / removing users on the EX4’s UI – you should be doing it on the AD controller.

I think there probably is a limitation that if you’re joined to an AD controller, that remote access may not be allowed.

I’ll see if I can dig up something else on that subject.

This issue is scheduled to be resolved with the next firmware update. Timing wise on the update - If not this week, then it will most likely be the week after new years.

Thanks, WDTony – always a pleasure to get straight answers!

Tony

Oh, now I find that this is a known problem! Thanks for the information, and I would like the firmware update asap, otherwise I shall go spare!

My viewpoint, and verified with an erudite techie I know, is that one cannot easily add users from the ‘cloud’ to an AD domain. No one would want to, either.

If there is to be Cloud access, as advertised, it means that even with an AD, the dashboard should only offer those users who are friends from the web, accessing via their WD App, through the Get Code page. Isn’t that how it should be? So that the AD part is for domain users to add data, or simply read stuff that is on the EX4, and the other side is access for anyone given the WD My Cloud ‘enter code’ chance?

So far, no update has appeared. A pity, since I had some files that I wished to share prior to the advent of 2014. That will not happen, sadly, and I am disappointed that the promise written on the packaging has not been fulfilled.

I have a single drive, 4TB, My Cloud ordered, for my daughter, suitable to hold files for her photography course. That won’t happen because they’re on back order. However, since she only has a laptop and a phone, then there should be no difficulty in her sharing on the Cloud after it arrives in her hot, little hands.

I have been checking for an update to cure this lack of granularity for the EX4. Nothing yet, and I’m becoming disenchanted that something that vaunts its ability to work with Active Directory actually does not.

Surely, someone in the WD community of technicians tried this NAS with a fixed IP arrangement, which is absolutely necessary in some companies, and in itself not uncommon.

Please fix this soon!

Are you on 1.02.25 and still have problems with AD?

Yes. And that was what the EX4 turned up with at the time of purchase.

I’m ‘lucky’ that I have a Seagate 4TB drive that works on the Global Access line, but that’s not why I purchased the EX4. Different boxes, different uses, and this situation is really frustrating.

So I go to the WD main site and check the latest software. This means I have it, and it also means that the problem is not fixed in any way. (I shall be phoning about this when possible.)

To have a techie write, on this subject, that the problem as given will be dealt with, and it is actually not, begs the question. Did they actually know what my problem is?

Basically, no icons to add users or to add Global Access users: differences between AD users and WD users prevent this.

An expensive piece of equipment, that does not work as advertised. Did they even test an EX4 with an AD setup with fixed IPs???
