Disappointed with WD TV Live Streaming

I bouthg this new unit last weekend. Setup was ok, firmware got updated a couple of times to the lates version.

Problems:

1. all my WMV files are not working with this box. I am surprised as on the package it says compatible to all formats and WMV is a common foramt. I have tried to play through media server, share folder and local storage (plug a hardrive to the box).I can see the files and it tries to load, but they all gave me the same error message, telling me to check the manual book for compatibility.Teh manual book says WMV is included. Tried AVI format, it's ok.

2. Out of the Services, only Youtube Videos work properly (which means the connection has no problem), all other services including Youtube show a black screen for long time (like 5 minutes) before registering my next key press. It takes a few minutes for the Youtube loading screen to come up and then stuck there forever.....

Could any body shine any light on me?I am thinking about returning the box to the shop.

Whats your router and setup?

NETGEAR DGND3700

Wireless connection

Please post the full TEXT output of MEDIAINFO for one of the WMV files that wont play.

I suspect you may have run info the dreaded bug many media streams hit…

The file may say one format but but be a odd codec.

Thanks. I’ll download the program and try to get the information out.

Those WMV files are played in my computer (Win7) with no problem though.

No surpise since windows 7 does quite a decent job of covering codecs .

Streaming devices are limited to free use codecs or ones payed for by the company for use.

Wd does a quite decent job of covering most of the bases and i haven’t found anything it wont play with the exception of some older odd codec stuff.

Yup, that’s WMV2, and is not supported.

As it says in the SUPPORTED VIDEO FORMATS section of the manual, only WMV9 is supported.

Wow wmv2 is one i haven’t seen in quite some time.

So these are dinosours?

Unfortunately I have lots and lots of them. Is there any easy way to convert them?

Handbrake can read them (usually) and convert them to MP4 or MKV.

Yeah there quite old these days but the suggestion above should let you do them all at once and  walk away as it doing it.

Thank you guys so much. I’ll try that.

No problem just pass it on to others when needed

Download and installed Handbrake. It converted 40+ movies last night while I was sleeping…

The software is free and works well. The converted new MP4 files now work with WD TV Live Streaming

Glad to hear it working perfectly for you now.

Yup great little program and a must have when you own a media streamer.

I would like to add my thanks for the tip on Handshake. I had a number of wmv videos that wouldn’t play.  I tried convering one with Windows Movie Maker to avi format that  plays well on my WD Live ; the file size went from 400M to over 6G and the process took a long time. The avi movie would play on my Windows PC but with a significant loss of video qualiity; it still wouldn’t play on WD Live Streamer.

I downloaded Handshake and converted a wmv to mp4; it converted quickly to a file under 300M and the audio and video quality is, to my eyes and ears, identical to the original.
