do not buy a wd ex4. slow slow slow.
Maybe yours is slow because you have it hooked up to slow equipment.
no. that is not the case. it is a slow NAS. it has an extremely limited set of software. it runs hot. i had to put external fans to keep it cool. i bought it due to the WD name thinking it would be good. it quickly became my backup NAS. it has WD RED 4 6TB disks in RAID 10. My qnap with 4 WD RED 6TB in raid 5 is twice as fast. hands down. Cisco gig switches, port channeled. all host pc’s with SSD hd’s. network engineer with 30 years experience. at every boot up i have to run a ssh session to kill 2 processes that start thumbnail creation that absolutely kills performance and WD has not fixed that issue.
The EX4 is near the bottom of NAS line. Maybe you should have bought up at the top of the line. My WD DL2100 is at that sweet spot; it can have 4GB RAM memory added to it, and file transfers are at 113 MB/sec.
I also have bad experiences with this NAS. When does Western Digital come out with a firmware that actually works to specifications? The last one 2.11.153 managed to erase all data from my MyCloud EX4 while resetting to factory settings (as advised by your help desk employee) because the installable apps were not available. All apps had just disappeared from the list. After the reset Dropbox could be installed, but I could not choose no folder to sync with dropbox. Now I updated to version 2.11.157. The dropbox problem still remains and when I try to setup a NAS to USB setup it will not store the configured backup! WHEN will all of this finally work to spec’s??? Perhaps you should test your software before rolling it out next time!
I woudn’t have minded to have some less apps available, if those that ARE available at least would have worked to specifications, which at least not all of them do. Furthermore most apps don’t make any sense for if you install more than about 3 or 4 the device gets so slow it almost looks “stuck” in a loop. Also it is very advisable to switch off all media functionality because that slows down the device by making all kinds of thumbnail files or whatnot. I for one will not soon buy another WD device like this. If I have to replace it (unfortunately I am not rich or else I would immediately do this) I would buy a Qnap, but never again a Western Digital. The disks are ok, but they obviously have no control over a device like this, running on Linux.
