Currently connectted my WD to my network using wireless. When I play movie with bitrate higher then my bb speed,
It’s very laggy.
Intend to connect WD to my router using LAN cable, will the bitrate of the movie still be affected by the speed of my bb?
I set the files to “share” option in my network.
Thank you.
Your bb (broadband?) speed is not a factor in determining whether high bitrate movies will play over the network. Unless, of course, you’re talking about streaming from an internet service like Netflix.
The quality of your wireless connection will certainly be a factor in most situations. I think you need a pretty solid N wifi connection to sustain high bitrate streaming from a network share.
You should see an improvement when switching to LAN cable. If you don’t, there may be issues with how your network / network shares are set up.
Something that may help smooth out playback on weaker wifi or powerline connections is streaming from a media server rather than a network share. Media Server software to check out includes TVersity (Windows) or Serviio (Windows, Linux and Mac). I’ve had a good experience with TVersity in the past but others reckon Serviio is easier to set up, night be worth checking that out first.
If you’re using a NAS, it may already have media server software (e.g. my MyBookLive NAS comes with Twonky). You can connect via network share and media server and see if there’s a difference / improvement. For me, a media server allows higher bitrate files to play smoothly.
Thank you for the advices. I had link up my WD to my router. Playback is perfect, using network share from my WD to play movie from my computer. No problem playing files of any sizes.
Have a nice day.
Glad it’s now working for you.
A physical cable still seems a lot better than wifi or powerline. Wish I could connect that way but we rent and my wife would kill me if I laid cable across 2 rooms to get to the router! :D
