I foolishly ran an rsync with delete, to an incorrect share, and only realised my error on seeing the disk usage change drastically on the WD local UI. Of course a secure backup would have negated my error, but I had a mental aberration, and deleted my only safepoint minutes before in a botched housekeeping effort.
I stated extundelete as an example undelete tool as I am used to using apt-get on Ubuntu, and thought this would be an appropriate tool. But I hadn’t done my homework on the non standard 64k page size for repositories that the WD now use on their cut down linux version since firmware V4+ , so i guess I am lucky that I haven’t bricked my 4Tb MyCloud.
I am a bit miffed I hadn’t read up on the break away from the Debian standard, and once I have recovered my files, will consider the merits of a roll back of my firmware to V3. Of course that depends on any suggestions for retrieving my 160Gb of pictures.
Sound advice, didn’t think of that as I was hoping to fix in situ, but as I couldn’t see any other easy alternatives I have done so. Unfortunately it would appear that the extundelete couldn’t restore anything from pre sync.
I guess that was a painful reminder of the need to preserve your backups, especially when trying out something new.
Thanks for advice, however, I stumble from idiocy to sheer cack-handedness.
In trying to relocate my drive, it now appears that I need a replacement PCB as I have broken the SATA connectors. It looks like I will be swapping the entire PCB and moving the firmware chip from the original board to the new PCB.
I am always keen to experiment, however I think in this instance, and after a list of fails, I’ll get a professional in to do the deed.
