Does the WD TV Live Hub slow down as you add more files to it?

So,

I just want to say that I have been a WDTV Live user for over 4 years and it is a great product!   I started with the 1st Generation and now I have the WDTV Live Hub.  The WD will convert most video files now, which saves me a lot of time from before.  Also the streaming from my XP PC (Network Drive) is almost as fast as playing from the WD drive, which is very nice.

With the current version comes a 1 TB drive installed internally.  Since I was looking for disk space for my local PC as backup, I thought that I would use the new Live Hub since it was 1TB and  was clean.

I think that was a bad move. After I was said and done the backup of my Windows XP PC involved 191 GB,   322,936 files and 40,134 files.  The operation of the WD has been a little slow  / flakey ever since I made the backup to the drive.  I have no problem hooking up to the WD wirelessly from my PC through a Verizon MI424WR router and the transfer rates are pretty good.  The movie play sometimes gets out of sync with the menu and I have the rotating arrow along with the movie playing at the same time.

I am in the process of deleting that directory (when I started deleting Windows said it would take 129 minutes ) so I kicked it off tonight.

My questions are:

1)  Is there any cleanup that I need to perform, other than reboot to the WDTV to make sure it doesn’t still think those backup files are there?

  1. Is there any way that I can use the 1 TB drive to backup files, but it doesn’t  effect the operation of the WD to play movies or use services like Netflix or MLB?

Thanks!   Great product.!

Rick

Reformatting your WDTV Live Hub’s HDD would have been quicker way to delete the 191GB (assuming that’s all you had on the Hub’s Internal Drive)

Setup > System > Disk Manager > Select Drive > Format

Now this leads me to another question…has anyone ever removed the drive from the Hub and connected it to a PC, deleted the partitions and put it back in the Hub and formatted it? Did it work? I supposing it would be no different than installing a new drive in the Hub…

@RickS

Make the winxp folder a hidden folder “invisable” to the Live Hub … put a “.” in front of it

This will prevent the Live Hub from attempting to scan the folder contents (which are PC files it won’t recognize)

Sure, it will ignore the files … but only after attempting to scan them.

  1. In WinXp make sure Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden files and folders >

Show hidden files and folders … is checked

  1. Download this zip file and save it to your Winxp Desktop …extract it … then  Double Click

winxp.bat and it will create a folder named .winxp

  1. copy this .winxp folder to your Live Hub and cut’n’paste your original winxp folder into it

  2. Reboot you Live Hub and it will not “see” or attempt to scan this folder

  3. You are still able to see this folder via your PC

Thanks to you and flh. Quick reply.

Does it take long to format?

The information is great. Where did you find the out about the hidden folder, not being recognized by the wd?

the good thing is that the wd works better now. the rotating arrow went away and the wd is responsive to the commands. i can use it peace. on the gen 2 i had, i used the custom firmware wdlxtv. do people recommend that, or stick with the stock firmware
