Drive giving all kinds of errors all of a sudden?

Hi,

I have my pc for about 4 years now and the whole time it’s been working fine. But all of a sudden my drive (WD Green Caviar 1,5 TB it says when I opened up my computer) is starting to display these errors?

The HP Diagnostics Tool also started to fail the SMART short self test. Everything else in the test finished without a hassle though. CrystalDiskInfo is showing me some write errors, pending sector counts and uncorrectable sector counts. These numbers were always zero, before last week. The write errors went up from 7 to 191 just yesterday! I ran CHKDSK and System File Checker, but it didn’t correct anything according to the log, although I told it to do so.

Does this mean my drive is at the end of its life-cycle and I should prepare to get a new one? Problem is that I have a recovery partition, so if I buy a new drive I won’t have access to Windows 7, because I don’t own a physical copy… it came pre-installed when I bought the pc. Is it possible to try to wipe the hd without wiping the recovery partition? HELP!!

Hi yes that means the drive is going out and you need a new one. On a HP computer there is a program that will write your recovery partition to DVD’s you need to write your recovery media NOW before the drive fails. Once you have that done when you replace the drive, then you would boot from the first recovery DVD. First it will recreate the recovery partition on the new hard drive and then install windows. Once you boot up it will be back to the exact same setup when you bought the PC. This link will explain how to do it.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=ca&lc=en&docname=c01867124 . The next time when you buy a prebuilt PC be it HP,Acer or what ever the first thing you do before you start to use it, is burn the recovery media.
