i was using it as NAs for my tomato router. it was formatted in ubuntu with 4 partition 1swap and 3 ext3.
then it suddenly shuts down. tried putting it directly in pc change cable change usb slot and it didnt work. figure it was a enclosure problem so i opened it and took the HDD. it was a WD15EACS 16mb cache. put in in 2 pc it was detected in bios but as 0GB and no serial number on it. tried the jumper but same problem. it will spin up for at least 5 to 10 seconds so probably not a PUIS problem. tried hiren boot cd and ultimate boot cd tools to recognize it but hdat2 can only see it as 0gb and icant access any feature on it so no way can check if it is PSUI prob. windows7 can see it in disk management but cannot initialise and only 0gb as well. WD diagnostic tool cant even detect it… bios is already on AHCI tried different sata cable and power. also tried the WD enclose with another hd and it didnt work so i think the problem is the enclose since the WD HDD got detected in bios. so maybe its PSUI but i cant think of anymore way to check it.
any help is appreciated
thanks
anyway tried using HDD capacity restore and its still showing 0GB and no model and serial number. also tried using it on ubuntu and mint linux and it doesnt even show in gparted ordisk management. BTW 1 pc is p5vd2-mx running on xp 1 on win7. i just dont think both enclosure and HDD got messed up at the same time.
when it spins up you hear any sounds coming from the drive? other than spinning
if no serial # in bios, than your drive is just going by info from the ROM.
if your drive constantly recalibrates, or makes slight clicks than preamp shorted out most likely and your drive would need new heads. if it spins and stays spinning then it could be firmware issue (thats on the platters), so DR equipment is needed to fix this kind of stuff.
i dont hear any souds from the drive. it spins smoothly. i have to put my ear next to it to know its is spinning, by the way it spin 5 to 10 seconds. not 5 mins. my bad. anyway my tomato router got spin down capability and i did eneble it.
also win xp cant detect it but win 7 can detect it with disk management and it shows 0GB but cant initialize. also when using some dos hdd tools it shows some sp[ace, like 512 kb or something.
I’ve have two new 2TB Caviar Green drives destined to go in a Synology NAS.
The drives were first successfully installed in a Netgear NAS. However very shortly after the storage device developed a (networking) fault, so I removed the drives and ended up returning the Netgear box.
Rather than continue with Netgear (bad experience and support), I now wish to use a Synology NAS device, however it is not recognizing the drives when I attempt to partition and format them.
Their suggestion is to remove them from the NAS device and connect them to a PC to delete all the partitions off the drives. So I now have a drive installed in an external USB caddy, running under Windows 7. Though I can see the drive it shows 0 GB and I am unable to partition or reformat it in any way using the Disk Management options.
I’m wondering if this is because the drives were formatted by Linux (the Netgear OS)?
Anyway, I’m simply wanting to get back to square one with the drives. Is there a utility or something that I can run that reverts the drive back to it’s original state. The Data Lifeguard diagnostics also show 0GB.
I’ve raised a ticket, but any advice gratefully received.
