Just wanting to know if anyone has been successful in moving their RAID (4 HDD’s in Raid 5) from an EX4 Enclosure → EX4100 & keeping the array & data. I believe this is called Raid Roaming & each drive needs to be moved into the same slot they came from?
There appears to be some confusion/lack of clarity going around & would really like some confirmation before I go about purchasing an empty EX4100 Enclosure to transfer my drives from my current EX4.
Yes, it is true you can move your RAID from one unit to another or different model. The drives don’t have to be in the same slot. As the software raid can detect which drives belong to which RAID. I can even move my RAID 5 three hard drive from EX4100 to my personal desktop computer running linux and still able to keep my RAID 5. Is that awesome. So it let you know it is safe.
That’s awesome news… I don’t think even WD Tech Support know this … My mate is in the same position as I & wanting to upgrade to the EX4100 & WD Tech support responded with the following:
"Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is [[DELETED]].
We apologize for the delayed response regarding this case you created and I will be the agent to assist you on this.
The RAID arrangements are only supported if you move the drives from one enclosure to another of the same model number, so regarding your inquiry, it will not be possible to move the RAID to the EX4100 without erasing all data inside the drives. You will have to transfer the information over the network for this to work.
We apologize for the inconveniences this may cause to you."
