Expanding Storage

Hello,

I would like to buy a 3TB MyBook to expand the capacity of my WD MyCloud and for safepoints backups. My worry is that by having the MyBook connected to the MyCloud will leave it running all the time which is not ideal for and HDD. Is this true or will the MyBook enter some kind of sleep or hibernation when not being used directly?

All advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As an owner of the WD Cloud and a MyBook (which pairs off nicely as WD intended), the MyBook sleeps by itself and stays asleep if not mapped or accessed.

Having said that, I do not think the USB port itself powers down; thus whatever USB device that you connect must have its’ own sleep ability.

Thanks for the advice.

So I took the plunge and invested in a 3TB My Book which has been connected to the My Cloud. So far all has been working great with one exception; after rebooting my Mac I can no longer see the folder for the My Book while going through the My Cloud. Any thoughts?

you may need to add the path to the MyBook in your favorite servers to connect instead of browsing for the MyBook. I’ve noticed that when the devices sleeps, they need to be woken up before being seen.

You can also connect to a Cloud Share first… then browse for other shares of which the MyBook should show up afterwards; just make sure that whomever you are “connected as” has access to the MyBook share too.
