I bougt a external hard drive from western digital (2tb elements). I wanted to connect this one with my western digital live tv but he didn’t recognize it. I find this strange because I have two western digital essentials (one 1Tb and the other 1.5) and they don(t cause any problems. I read a few things here about formatting the drive in 512 bites but I couldn’t format the drive and now my pc doesn’t recognize the Elements any more. Could it be that the elements was just a bad drive an that’s the reason why my media player didn’recognize it?
Well, the fact your PC doesn’t see your drive is a far bigger issue than whether the Live works with it or not. Try and get that resolved first (and perhaps post in the Elements forum here) and once you’ve got it so you can see it and reformat it then you can try again with the Live.
Or… if you can’t get that far then the drive should be replaced.
I had exactly the same problem with my new external 2TB wd elements. First it was not recognized by the WDTV Live. Then I tried to format it with my PC (win xp pro sp3). Did not work. My PC did not recognise it anymore.
I found the solution here on the forum. Use EASEUS Partition Master (Free in the home edition) to format the drive. Use 4kb and NOT 512kb size (important). Use NTFS. Preset was FAT32 with 4KB. So change to 4kb with NTFS.
After that my PC and the wdtv live recognised the drive and everything works fine since then.
