External hard drive not recognised by WDTV live - done usual tweaks to no avail

As above. I have a Hitachi Touros 2Gb drive, MKVs on it. I had an issue with the drive getting a bit slow because it was full and fragmented. took all my films off, reformatted the hard drive in NTFS (not “quick format”, the long one!), put my films back on. When I plug in the drive to one of the USBs the Live box is putting out a message about reading USB storage, then nothing happens. I go in by either “movies” or “files” and no media is found under “local storage”. The drive has no faults when scanned on the computer (properties>tools>scan drive etc). I have done a full reset of the Live box.

Tried both USB ports, tried attaching the drive via USB and then plugging in. Nothing seems to work. My Live box is not asking for a firmware update - everything seems up to date.

Any last ditch suggestions?

Well my Seagate is working now, just not the Hitachi. Hitachi still recognised as fully working and scan reveals nothing untoward when it is connected to the computer. Could it be the proper long format rather than a quick format that is the issue? Was hoping that after recognition of 1 drive, the other would be recognised too when plugged in at the same time (I even unplugged it and plugged back in - a quick recognition of a connection made to a USB device, but then not recognised), but alas that is not the case.

Hello,

Are you using the USB Cable that comes with the drive or a different one?

How long is the cable?

Is the media player directly connected to the wall outlet?

Is the drive working properly on a Computer?

Using the USB cable that came with the drive, which connects just fine to the computer. It is USB3, 80cm long and undamaged. Drive working properly with the computer, scans reveal no errors. WDTV box is on an extension lead, but tried plugging in directly to the wall, same result. When first attached to the WDTV Live box, there are a few seconds that it recognises a USB device is attached and tries to scan it, but then seems to lose it. Hard drive recently reformatted the long way as NTFS, not quick format.

Are you plugging it in while the WDTV is powered “ON”  ?  (i heard somewhere, a problem doing it while the unit was On)

if so, power off the WDTV completely  (hold power button for 5 seconds)  or just switch off at the wall socket.

Plug the Hitachi USB in … then Power On the WDTV

I have tried both ways. Live box off and plugging in, live box off and plugging it in. Also tried plugging everything in, live box on then HDD on.

I’m really feeling it might be the proper long format rather than quick format before putting the files back on…
