Fasster way to copy data from old NAS to EX4

Anyone know the faster way to move data from old Non-WD NAS to the EX4?

Moving via copy-paste from within Windows is painstakingly slow.

What I’m currently doing is open two Windows Explorer windows and on one navigate to the share on the old NAS and navigate to the share on EX4 on the second window. Then do a copy-paste from one Explorer window to the other but that is very slow.

Anone has better ideas?

Depends on your old NAS.

If your old NAS supports FTP, the you can use the FTP App (in the EX4 UI) to copy from your old NAS to the EX4.

That is a very good suggestion to try.

Let me see if that makes a dent in the poor performance of large data copy.

What do you consider poor performance?

What is your current copy speed?

I got 10 to 15 MB/s write with RAID 5 over a gigabit ethernet.

At least with FTP, I do not have to have a computer turned on and busy for the copy to progress. That benefit is worth something at least.

Looking at ways to improve on this speed and trying to see what could be bottleneck, if any.

Yeah, 15MB/s is on the slow side.  You should see at least 30 - 40MB/s over gigabit.

If I can get to that sustained speed, I would be all set.

Out of curiosity, you have RAID 5 with 4 drives of 2TB WD red? or something else?

Just want to see if I’m missing anything in my config that would be the cause of the slower speeds.

Curently, I started a FTP folder copy job last night from EX4 that was still running as of today morning. The job tells me the time it started. Don’t know if it would show the end time once it finishes to ascertain the total runtime against the amount of data copied.

Do you know how how we can monitor the speed at which the ftp process is copying the data while it is running?

Yes, I have the same EX4 setup as you.

You can monitor the copy process by opening the UI in your browser, then clicking the arrow next to the Network Activity, CPU, etc on the Home screen.   Than will show you the CPU usage, Network up and down speeds, etc.

You can also click on the either Network Activity or the small graph to see a larger graph of the Network up and down speed.

Thanks. I will look into monitoring from dashboard.

I wonder what I am doing wrong or different to have such write speeds?

I need to do some more experiments I guess.

I tried onloading my ex4 from a external usb 3.0 raid0 setup.  The transfer was still abysmally slow.  I wonder if the ex4 does some type of crc checking of the incoming data.

you were trying to copy from the usb drive connected to one of the usb port on EX4 or to your computer?

Directly attached to the ex4. It auto mounted the raid 0 stripe as a share.

How were you trying to copy from the USB drive to the EX4?

Are using your PC or via the UI?

Via the ui USB drive auto mounts as share. Using backup feature on ui.
