Filename to long

Filename to Long. One of my Passport Ultras, I have 2 passports & 2 Ultras each with 2TB’s & this is the only one not accepting long file names why? Phone tech support said I should call Microsoft? Does anyone have a better solution, a setting under properties or through the control panel, ETC? Thanks. I dl’ed Long Path Tool but they’re asking for a fee. Peculiar that the other passports don’t have a problem backing up the same files.
Another question if you shorten a filename will it still be recognized by the program it’s associated with?

Hello,

See if the following link helps
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/error-message-the-file-names-would-be-too-long-for/067ac100-b82a-4754-9fb5-9dd50aed8b90?auth=1

Thanks ER but this did not solve my problem. Here are the Folders & Filename which I count as 150’ish characters counting spaces & omitting the directory. Your link says the limit is 259.

SEAGATE2 (D:) ~> MY SETUP FILES ~> FORMATING ~> CONVERTING FAT32 to NTFS IN WINDOWS XP ~> BOOTING.com DRIVE IMAGE, BOOT FORMAT & PARTICIAN ~> BOOT DISC FILE (Burn to Disc for ReBooting) ~> BOOTITNG.ISO

That is the full path, The Directory (SEAGATE2 (D:) followed by 5 Folders & the finally a single filename (BOOTITNG.ISO). I’ve found much shorter examples that get the same message too.

I read from this link that Long Path Tool was free but I’m getting a message to register it for $7? I’ll have to look at it again.

From the description it looks “Long Path Tool” can help to handle this kind of issue. Please give it a try.

I usally use long path tool to resolved this kind of issue. Been helpful with me.

Haven’t dare try this simple changing the registry method but according to How-To-Geek it’s looks easy & could do the trick also.

Thanks for any & all suggestions.
