WD 1 TB hard drive - WDBAAF0010HBK-00 (or WDBAAF0010HBK-NESN)
Operating systems:
Formerly Windows XP, now Windows 8
The hard drive has been hooked up to the media player since I got it. The media player is connected to my router, which is several feet away, via an ethernet cable.
I noticed the following problem quite a while ago with XP, but since I switched to Windows 8, I have been checking the hard drive more closely, and found that the problem is much worse than I had expected.
What is happening – something is changing file types into directories. This includes JPG, MP3, WAV, FLAC, AVI, and MKV files. For example, if the file name was file1.jpg, it changes into a directory with the same file name.
There is no rhyme or reason to this, because there are some old files with these extensions that are not touched, whereas more recent ones have been modified in this manner.
If you click on these directories, you get this error: “[File path] is not accessible. The directory name is invalid.” You also cannot delete the directory. The error message is similar (with Windows 8 there is no error message when deleting, but nothing happens).
I tried using some utility which supposedly will totally destroy any files which cannot be normally deleted, but that did not work.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?
I think the only solution may be to move everything which is still OK off the drive and then reformat the drive.
(P.S., I ran virus checker on the drive, it reported no problems…)
