Hey folks,
I was hoping to poll the forum for the recommended “order of doing things” when doing a firmware upgrade.
The last time I tried back in Jul/Aug, my wdcloud bricked and after many hours with phone support, they ended up sending me a new unit which fortunately had a stable version of the firmware (v03.04.01-230) that I then quickly disabled auto update on. While this has been relatively stable for me, (still some minor freezes and access problems during indexing, nothing new here) Id like to upgrade to avoid the BASH/Shellshock issues and the other improvements that the firmware release notes promise.
Now Im running my 4 TB unit (with about 2.5 TB of media on it) with a 4 tb mybook for backups using the safepoint feature (which appears to be working). Primarily accessed from a windows 8.1 machine.
So, before I push the button, what do you all think?
should I disconnect the mybook, etc?
make sure ssh is enabled?
any tips would be appreciated.
I don’t have a USB drive attached but unmounting and removing it would be a good idea as many people have reported issues here after the previous FW upgrade
don’t add it back until you are sure everyting is stable, a couple of days is not unreasonable.
if you are even a little comfortable with getting into Linux then enabling SSH is a good idea as it enables options if there are issues.
i did the last upgrade remotely from my phone app with no issues, I don’t really recomend this but wanted to try it.
as with any FW upgrade be patient, if it appears to hang just wait as you can wind up in a bad sistuation if you reboot in the middle
I wouldn’t expect any issues.
Hi and welcome to the WD Community.
It is always good to have a backup of your My Cloud before an update, also it is better if you do the update with the My Book disconnected and just plug it back in when the firmware update is finished.
As recommended I would un mount your USB drive and install via the dashboard on your windows 8.1 PC, upgraded twice now and not had a problem either time.
I did like 4 or 5 if not more (just got it so it was outdated) manual firmware updates today and it went 100% every single time. It’s a solid device at least from my experience.
I updated my 4TB mycloud with the USB drive connected and the mycloud is now having issues. Would you recommend that I reformat the USB drive and then redo the safepoint as the solution to fix this up? I am thinking that is what I might need to do. Should I also reapply the firmware or do a system restore? Will my existing mycloud data be wiped out with just the system restore?
personally I would unmount and disconnect the drive, do a system only restore, reboot wait awhile for it to stabilize, reattach the USB disk
if you have issues after this the USB drive format and re-apply FW is an option
Please let us know either way as there seems to be a lot of USB issues that would be nice to get a handle on
Tonight, I disconnected the USB drive from the mycloud, re flashed the firmware, and while that was happening, I connected the mybook to my computer and deleted the safepoint. Once the mycloud was up and running, I reconnected the USB drive. I then recreated the safepoint and it is now running as expected. Hopefully it will continue that way. it will take a day and a half to rebuild the safepoint.
Hi,
if you want to make a relaxed update:
=> Make backup
exhibit all switches
=> FTP = OFF
=> SSH = OFF
=> Remote = OFF
=> Media Server = OFF
=> Static IP = DHCP IP
all USB devices unmount and disconnect
Attention !!! USB devices with Safe Point, before unplug, be sure to “eject” with the control button in the UI.
