1: Only if all devices are 1gig as well, in a few words, MBL, Switch and laptop nic need to be all 1gig.
2: Yes, same as above. However, sometimes if you have other systems connected to the same switch, and all are sending lots of traffic, depending on switch, you mght see it slow down a bit.
Like Shabuboy says, you only get true gigabit speeds IF (and only IF) ALL of the links in the chain are a gigabit aswell.
If your laptop/desktop is only running 100, then it will slow down to the speeds you are seeing. If you are unsure if your laptop is gigabit, then post the model no here, and ill have a look.

Your statement is somewhat true. If any device non-GB is plugged into the switch it will not affect the other ports. For example: all links on my LAN are GB, except for a powerlink ethernet adapter connect to the same switch. The only traffic on that link is for surveillence dvr connection. All other LAN traffic destined between my MBL and PC or wireless router is at GB speeds. Just wanted to clarify the statement.
