Hangs after 10-15 hours

after upgrade from OS3 to OS5 the My Cloud (single bay) drive hangs after 10-15 hours of use - cannot connect to it, can’t even do the soft reset - only option is to plug the power and put back in to only work for another 10-15 hours and REPEAT.
Please don’t point to any existing topic links on this forum, I have tried it all. And please don’t point to naive things like have you checked your network cable or power cable…the drive just hangs with no response. Lastly don’t point to WD official documentation, it is of no help. Even the “Shutdown” button is not available on the dashboard which is shown in documentation.
This drive was supposed to save time…It instead killed lot of hours.

Well if one searches the subforums they’ll see the single bay second gen My Cloud has a lot of trouble running OS5. Many complaints across numerous discussions. If one search’s the subforums they’ll find that some have decided to roll back their firmware on their second gen single bay My Cloud back to OS3 (v2.x) firmware even though WD states one cannot officially roll back to the earlier firmware. There are a number of other past posts detailing how to possibly roll back the firmware to OS3.

Choice is yours on if you want to try that option, or wait and hope that WD maybe fixes the OS5 firmware at some future time so it doesn’t drag the second gen single bay My cloud to a stop/crawl.

Right now pretty much the basic first step to fix a sluggish My Cloud running OS5 is to turn off Cloud Access/Remote Access and possibly turn off Twonky (if installed) in OS5. It is the indexing that often drags down the OS5 My Cloud units.

Thanks Bennor, before writing to this forum, the last thing I had done was to turn off cloud access, but it is not saving time as I have to manually backup stuff. Firmware revert can keep the drive from hanging but phone apps on OS3 had stopped working and asking for upgrade to OS5, so either ways cloud access is gone. Maybe I will wait for OS5 improvements, can’t waste more time fixing.

Congratulation OS5 team! you have successfully destroyed my hard drive by doing 24X7 indexing leading to crawl and stop

@AJB

  1. Are you on 5.14.105 firmware?
  2. Have you opened a support case?
  3. Have you collected the system logs after a reboot and attached the system logs to your support case?
  4. What’s your case number?

Thanks SB, My device is out of warranty period so is WD official support still available? Hence I spent lot of time on community support. Currently I have shut off the drive until I get time to first back it up. The drive had started showing “SMART failure predicted on drive 1. Immediately back up your data and replace the drive” error. Once I get it back online I will create log and raise a ticket.

I have the exact same issue, there is a way to fix this???

thanks.
